How Credit Card Charges Are Processed

December 28th, 2005

It’s a fact that businesses offering credit cards as a payment option are more likely to have higher revenues than businesses that don’t. So, if you’re a business owner and you are thinking of jumping on this bandwagon to higher profits, understanding the process before you make any decisions would be beneficial. Knowing just how your customer’s charges go from point A, your store or business, to point B, your bank account can give you tips as to what to look for in a processing company.

The Process
This process is basically a series of steps: initiating, authorizing, completing the transaction, and lastly, receiving your funds. Let’s start at the beginning.
The process begins when you accept the card from the consumer. The next step is to verify that the card is active and the amount of the purchase is within the cardholder’s available credit limit. How that verification is done depends upon the equipment that is available to you, and how you interact with your customer.
If you own a business in which the customer can present you with the actual card, like stores and restaurants, then you can physically take the card and swipe it through your card terminal. If you own a business that is online, your customer enters their own information into your form. Mail order and call center-based businesses usually have computer-based terminals for entering charge card data.
The second step is authorization. The key for reducing any problems during the initial phase is to make sure you are using technology that allows for real-time authorizations. This software will immediately send the card number and amount to the card processor and the processor immediately approves or denies the sale. This is critical for cutting back on charge-backs and card errors.
Third, you will need to complete the transaction. At the end of the business day, any credit card charges will need to be processed. This procedure is called batching and can be done either by hand or on your credit card terminal. Once this is done, the credit card processor will send each credit card company represented in the batch the transaction that took place. Once this is done, each credit card company will debit the cardholder’s account. This ends this part of the transaction and all that is left is for the monies to be transferred into your account. This usually takes place pretty quickly, often within two to four business days.
Safety Issues
Since the process can take a few days to complete, knowing that your money is safe and will actually be credited to your account is a key concern. Many credit card processing companies have protection policies in place that will absolve you of any responsibility should you be a victim of credit card fraud as long as you followed their authorization procedures 100%. Before you decide on which processing company to go with, check out their safety policies, particularly if you are an Internet company. You will want as much protection as you can get.

Different Types of Credit Cards and Features

December 28th, 2005

Just as there are too many credit card companies to count, there seems to be just as many different credit cards, all claiming to offer you the best possible deal. Since no two people are alike, not all programs and incentives will work the same for everyone. Finding the one that works best for you is key to maintaining responsible credit card use.

Types of Credit Cards
One of the more recent additions to the credit card world is the low-interest credit card. If you live anywhere in the U.S., you’ve probably already received information regarding this type of card. These cards offer a significantly lower interest rate than some of the older ones that you may already have. Also, most of these cards are also balance-transfer cards. They offer you the option of transferring a balance from a higher interest rate card and, for a specified period of time, your transferred balance will be at either 0% interest or something quite low. This can end up saving you a fair amount of money, particularly if your hope is to pay it off.
Since credit cards have gotten to be such a lucrative business, many corporations have jumped on the bandwagon. Even airlines now offer credit cards to customers that will come with a certain amount of frequent flyer miles attached to them, depending on your balance and purchases. If you do a fair amount of traveling, this can be a real bonus. Along these same lines, reward credit cards are growing in popularity. Competition is stiff and many card companies are now offering you many different reward or incentive options for using their card. Once you accumulate enough points, the rewards will pore in. These can be anything from travel insurance to small appliances and anything in between. If you use a card regularly, finding one that has a reward program can really pay off.
Another form of credit card is the instant approval card. Again, many of these applications come in the mail, some even by e-mail. These cards offer you the opportunity to apply for a card and receive instant approval, meaning no wait time. Once you fill out the application, a quick background check will be done and you will have your approval almost immediately. Other cards can take up to two weeks to process and approve your application. Although you can get instant approval, this does not always mean you can get instant credit. Some companies will supply you with a temporary credit card number and allow you to begin making purchases immediately, while other will not due to an increase in credit card fraud potential.
Since there are so many options when it comes to choosing a credit card, do a little research before you apply. Decide what type of card will best fit your needs and apply for that one. Don’t go over board though, applying for too many cards will negatively affect your credit score.

Various Types of Credit Cards

December 28th, 2005

Several different types of credit cards offer several different options, depending on what your needs are. Some are geared toward individual consumers while others are set up in ways that work best for small business needs. To know what type of card fits your needs, let’s review a few of your options.

Business Credit Cards
A business credit card offers the business owner the opportunity to keep business and personal expenses separate. The card may offer special business rewards and saving opportunities that go above and beyond what the individual card owner may have. Since money management is essential in successfully running a business, the card may offer an expense management service that will allow you to keep track of the outgoing money. You can obtain additional cards for employees who may need them for travel expenses and such as well as have a higher credit limit than you normally would on an individual card.
Student Credit Cards
Many credit card companies will issue student cards that have lower credit limits and fewer incentives to help keep their spending in check. Still, take note. Many college students graduate with a credit balance that averages between $3,000 and $7,000 and with interest rates, this can be a real problem when trying to pay them off.
Prepaid Debit Cards
Prepaid debit cards are one type of credit card that has grown significantly in recent years. Although they work like a traditional credit card when making a purchase, that is where the similarities end. With prepaid debit cards, you have actually prepaid and set the credit limit by depositing money onto the debit card. Depending on how much you have deposited into the debit card’s account depends on how much credit limit you want on that card. This is a great way to have the convenience of a credit card without the chance of charging more than you can afford to pay off.
Credit Cards For Bad Credit
It is possible, even with bad credit to obtain a credit card. These cards will come with some restrictions not typically found on other types of cards. Your credit limit will be lower and your interest rate higher. Some may require you to have a secured card, meaning you have to maintain a savings or some other type of account that will cover the expenses on the credit card. Once you have established that you will be responsible, some, if not all, of your restrictions may be lifted.
Cash Back Cards
Many cards will now offer you cash back incentives for using their cards. Depending on how much your balance is and how often you use the card, you can earn cash back for your purchases. Some companies offer 1% off your balance while others, like Sears, will offer you cash off purchases made in their store. Either way, if you are planning on using a card, finding one that will offer you a cash incentive is a smart choice.

Time To Pay Your Bill!

December 28th, 2005

So, you’ve had your credit card for a while. You’ve used it, possibly even too much. Now it is time to start paying it off. Unfortunately, the joy you probably experienced while you were charging up a storm is about to turn into dread. Paying off a credit card is a whole lot harder than charging one. There are some options that you have, as well as some tips to make the whole ugly process go a little smoother.

How To Pay Off A Balance
Of the people who carry a credit card, about one-third of them do not pay off their balance each month. If you’re one of these people, you may have noticed that even though you pay the minimum payment due each month, the balance either never changes or even continues to grow.
Just why does this happen, you may ask? Well, let me let you in on a little secret the credit card companies hope it will take you a long time to figure out. The amount of your minimum payment is usually equal to the interest only that is due on your balance. It may even be less. So, even if you’re paying your minimum amount on time each month, none of that payment is actually going to the principal. At this rate, you’ll never pay off your card. So, let’s go over a couple of tips that may help you put a dent in your balance.
First, quit using your card. If you need to make some changes in your lifestyle, then do it. Unless it is truly an emergency, don’t use your card for anything. Charges will only keep the vicious cycle going.
Pay more than the minimum payment due. For reasons stated above, this is critical to eliminating credit card debt. If you can, transfer your card to a card that has a lower interest rate. These applications come in the mail all the time. Just remember, this new card isn’t for charging. It’s to be used as a tool to pay the balance off.
Payment Agreements
When you apply for any credit, there are several different payment agreements that you can opt for. The first is the revolving agreement. This basically means that you can either pay off the card each month or make only partial payments. If the balance is not paid off though, you will be charged an interest rate on the balance. This is the most popular form of payment agreements.
The second kind is the charge agreement. This is set up so that you are required to pay off the balance in full each month and the third agreement is the installment agreement. This allows you to pay a fixed amount of the balance each month until the balance is paid in full.
Choose a payment option that will work best for you and proceed wisely. Nothing ruins your credit score like a bunch of late payments!

Help! My Credit Card Application was Denied

December 28th, 2005

Yes, you’ve gotten literally hundreds of credit card applications in the mail and each and every one of them has said you have been pre-approved. Of course it is natural that this would lead us to believe that the application process is simply a formality. After all, you’ve been approved already so no worries, right? Wrong! Many of the offers that say you’re pre-approved don’t actually mean for the credit card. I know it’s misleading, but what they’re really saying is that you’ve been approved to apply for your card, not actually receive one. Your actual approval will depend on several different things, any of which can keep you off the receiving end. We’ll go over some of the reasons for rejection and what, if anything, can be done about them.

Why You Were Rejected
The most probable answer is your credit score. Although several other things may have been taken into consideration, such as your salary or time on your job, your credit score is usually the biggie. The catch here is that your credit history doesn’t even have to be bad, it can be blank and that will work against you just as much as a bad score will. Having no credit is almost as bad as having bad credit since the credit card companies have no reference point to see just how you will handle your credit account.
If you have a history of making late payments on bills and other loans, that will work against you. The credit card company wants to know that you are a worthwhile risk before they issue you a card.
As I mentioned above, other issues also come into play. If you have just started a new job, a creditor may want to wait a while to make sure that you keep it. These are other factors that will be considered if your credit history is less than perfect but not a total loss.
What To Do
Clean up your credit history! This is the single best step you can take in improving your options when it comes to credit cards and other types of loans as well.
Most creditors are required to tell you why you were rejected and what credit bureau they used to access your report. You may be entitled to a free copy of your credit report if the data contained on it was used to deny your application. Check with the credit bureau to see.
If your credit rating is poor, take action. Start paying your bills on time. See about consolidating your bills so you can afford to pay the monthly amount. Eliminate any extra spending that isn’t necessary and use that towards your outstanding debts. Yes, this could take some time, but in the long run it will be worth it.
Once you have cleaned up your credit a bit or established some basic credit, let some time pass. Apply for the card again. Once the creditor sees how hard you have been working to get your credit report up to par, you may just be rewarded for your efforts. Be careful, though. The last thing you want to do is go overboard with new credit and dig yourself into a financial hole!

Handling Your Credit Card Debt

December 28th, 2005

If you don’t pay attention, you can run up a staggering amount of credit card debt very quickly. In order to avoid that happening to you, follow these tips that are designed to keep credit card debt under control.

Credit Card Debt Management Tips
The first step to alleviating credit card debt is to stop using your credit cards. Take them out of your purse and wallet and leave them home in a drawer or safe place. Develop a budget based on your income and stick to it. Cards should only be used in a real emergency. Also, always make more than the minimum payment on your card. The minimum payment usually only covers the interest accrued that month so it may be that none of the payment is actually going toward your principal.
If at all possible, transfer your balance to a lower interest rate card. Many card companies now offer low or even zero percent interest on transferred balances for a specific period of time. Before you do this, however, make sure you know what the interest rate will go up to after the grace period is over.
If you have equity in your home, it is possible you could take out a home equity loan to consolidate your credit card debt into one monthly payment at a considerably lower interest rate. Only borrow the least amount of money you can to clear the card and pay attention to the closing costs. Think carefully before you do this though, since your home is the collateral and you could lose it if you default.
You could contact a free credit-counseling firm. They will negotiate lower interest rates and length of payments. They deal with the companies, but you still have to make your payments on time.
How To Use Credit Cards Wisely
Credit cards do make life a little easier as long as you use them responsibly. Here are some guidelines that should help you use these cards wisely.
A credit card is just like any other loan. It needs to be paid back. Don’t overspend.
Pay attention to the balance on your card. Always know just what it is and make sure to stop using your card once it exceeds the amount that you can afford to pay in full at any given time.
Keep your receipts from every transaction and balance them with your monthly statement. This will help alleviate any charge errors.
Pay your monthly bill on time. Even if it is just the minimum amount, it is still better than paying late. Not only will the charge card companies impost an interest penalty, your credit score could suffer also.
Don’t take your cards with you when you go shopping. If you are going somewhere where you know you will have a hard time controlling your spending, don’t take your card with you. Only take cash. It will keep your spending in check.
The moral of this story is obvious, use your cards wisely. Otherwise you will find yourself in a hole that could take forever to dig yourself out of.

Finding A Credit Card That Works For You

December 28th, 2005

Barely a day goes by without getting an offer to apply for a credit card, either by the traditional mail service or online. If this is something you are considering doing, there are several key issues that you will need to understand before you decide what card offer is right for you. All card offers will offer benefits. Finding the one that fits your needs is the key. Let’s discuss a few of the things you should be aware of before you do any applying.

What Do You Need The Card For?
This is the first and most important question you should ask yourself. Your answer will help to decide just what type of card and what incentives will work best for your needs.
For example, if it is for business use, look for a card that offers a cash-back for business purchases or membership to a discount buying club. Most companies will offer a low introductory rate for a specified amount of time but you need to know what it jumps to when that said time has expired. It may work best for your business if you find a long-term, more moderate interest rate than be stuck changing cards every few months to keep your interest in check.
If the card is for personal use, decide why and for what do you really need it for. If you plan on using it instead of cash and checks throughout the month but plan to pay it off each month, know what the card’s grace period is and what happens if you miss it. Pick a card that offers reward points even if you don’t carry a monthly balance. This can be a great way to rack up the frequent flyer miles as long as you’re disciplined enough to use it this way.
Know The Interest Rate
Many card companies will offer an initial interest rate that is quite low, sometimes even 0%, for a designated period of time. This rate usually applies to both transferred balances and new purchases. What you need to know is what happens after the introductory phase has ended. Will the interest then skyrocket? Will the interest rate be more moderate as long as you have a good payment history? Look for hidden costs such as an annual fee or a cash advance fee. These are important to know if you plan on using your card effectively.
Incentives
Many cards also offer a whole list of incentives with their application request. Although many of these are nice, usually you have to use your card a great deal to get them. This can become a kind of trap. You know, buy more to save more. If you’re going to use your card anyway, then you might as well have something to show for it. Look for cards that offer incentives that interest you and you would actually use.

How To Navigate The Application Process

December 28th, 2005

Once the decision has been made to obtain a credit card, applying for it is the next logical step. Not only can you apply for a card through the mail or over the phone, most credit card companies now offer their application services online. Either way, the basic information that you will need is the same.

Applying Online
First things first, find the right card for you. Not all cards offer the same interest rates and incentives so pick the one with terms and conditions that match your needs. Then simply go to that issuer’s web site and click on the “Apply” link. The application appears and you’re ready to get started.
Besides asking for routine personal identifiers such as your driver’s license number, social security number, date of birth, and current address, you will probably have to supply details regarding your employment, salary, banking relationships and other credit obligations.
Once the application is complete, the approval time can vary. Some card companies will offer you instant approval while others may take a week or two. The rate at which you are approved is generally based on your credit history. Once you have been approved, they will notify you by e-mail, mail, or phone.
Applying online is not only safe and secure, but pretty quick too. No waiting for the mail to travel back and forth between the two of you. All necessary correspondence can be done by e-mail.
Applying By Mail or In Person
Since we do get most of our offers for credit cards through the mail, this gives you the opportunity to sit with many different offers on paper right in front of you. Now you can take the time to read each offer in depth in order to decide what card fits your needs without using the computer at all.
All of the card offers will come with an application attached to it and, again, all you need to do is fill it out and return it. The paper applications will ask for the same details that the online ones do, so have your info handy. The approval process when applying by mail can take a little longer since the traditional mail service is not as quick as the web. You should still be able to have an answer in as little as two weeks or so.
Another option is to go to your local bank branch and apply for a card in person. This is virtually the same application process again, only you are dealing with a bank platform employee. The wait time for approval may be a bit quicker since the bank can easily check your credit history and knows your financial status.
Any of the application processes will work. Just be cautious when choosing a card and don’t apply for too many at once. Each credit check by the different card companies will show up on your credit report and too many hits are perceived as a negative.

Applying For A Credit Card With No Credit History

December 28th, 2005

Oddly enough, not only will bad credit work against you when applying for a loan or a credit card, but no credit will too. Even though this doesn’t seem fair, it is the way things work in the complicated world of consumer credit. Lenders are leery about opening accounts for people with no credit history because they simply have nothing to base your reliability on.

So, if you can’t build a credit history without credit and you can’t get credit without a credit history, just what has a person to do? It’s nearly impossible to rent a car, stay in a hotel, or shop online without a credit card, so let’s explore a few of the options that can eliminate this Catch-22.
Available Credit Options
Although many of the major credit card companies won’t give you a card without a credit history, some smaller ones, like department stores, will. Find a department store that will issue you a card and apply for it. You can try getting a gas station card also. Either way, use your card but be sure to make all payments on time. Your goal is to build a good credit history, not just get a credit card.
Find a credit card company that will review your overall financial situation and not just your credit history. Some lenders will look at your employment history, your housing situation, and how often you have moved. If this is all on the up and up, they may approve your application. Again, use this card wisely.
Credit Unions
If you are a credit union member, or are eligible for membership, see what their card issuing terms are. Although they are no giving out cards with their eyes closed, they will often have more relaxed conditions for members. You no longer have to work for a specific company to be eligible to join a credit union. So it’s well worth checking if there’s one in your area.
Secured Credit Cards
Secured credit cards are offered by lenders who will give you a line of credit that either matches, or is slightly higher than, a cash deposit that you give them to hold. As your experience with the card grows, these lenders will often raise your limit without requiring you to increase your deposit. Eventually, you can use your experience with this lender to apply for cards that are not secured.
Student Credit Cards
If you are a student, then you’ll be best off with a student credit card. Student credit cards can be a great way of building the credit history that you will need to depend upon after graduation. The important thing here is to remember to use that opportunity wisely. Many banks will issue college students a credit card, especially banks that are located in college or university cities and towns.
When you do manage to get a credit card, remember that you are establishing a credit history. Show that you are a good financial risk by paying the bill on time. Don’t go crazy with the spending. It will only cause you problems in the future.

Introduction to Credit Cards

December 28th, 2005

It’s hard to imagine doing business today without credit cards. If you are among the relatively few who do not own a credit card, the chances are good that you have a great deal of difficulty rent a car or reserving a hotel room. So, just what are these little plastic cards and how do they work? Let’s start by explaining the basics.

What is a Credit Card?
The dictionary defines a credit card as
‘A card which can be used to obtain cash, goods or services up to a stipulated credit limit. The supplier is later paid by the credit card company which in due course is reimbursed by the credit card holder who will be charged interest at the end of the credit period if money is still owing.’
In other words, whatever you charge to your credit account has to be paid back within the credit cycle or an interest amount will be applied to the remaining balance.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Credit Cards
The obvious advantage to using a credit card is that it allows you to purchase some goods or services that you may not be able to pay for immediately. The credit cycle is usually about 30 days, and if the money is paid in that amount of time, there is no interest attached to the money borrowed. This sounds good in theory, but the bottom line is that most Americans don’t pay off their balances on a monthly basis. This is where some of the disadvantages come into play.
Any amount that isn’t paid off within the time of the monthly cycle will be subjected to an interest charge. Depending upon the rate charged by the specific card issuer, that interest rate can be huge. On top of that, many people will continue to charge things to their card and the balance and interest just continues to grow until they have no hope of ever paying the card off if they just make the minimum required payment.
Credit Requirements
Chances are that every few days you get a pre-approved credit card application with your name on it. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well, read the fine print and you’ll see that many of these offers come with heavy penalties that can add up to high interest rates and annual fees.
To get the best possible interest rate with no additional fees, the credit companies will look at your credit history for information. They will check to see that you are responsible with your credit and have paid your bills in a timely manner. Signs of stability and credit responsibility will go a long way in reducing the amount of interest that card company will charge you. Outstanding loans with late payments and too much available credit will work against you.
Although credit cards can be great in an emergency situation, they can easily get out of hand. Before you apply for one, decide in advance what you plan to use it for. If used with discretion, they can come in pretty handy.

Sorry if an answer somehwere else…

On this screen shot http://www.gizmoproject.com/screen-shots.html

to the left of the “Map It” button and below the starfish icon there are two out of three signal bars darkened.

What does that represent and how is it different from the Call Quality Assistant? (Ledgend #2).

On most of my calls they are different: I usually have 3 on the Call Quality and only 1 on the mystery level indicator.

Mouseover (on the linux version) doesn’t show anything.

Thanks!

I waded in on GizmoProject via the Party Line. One annoying event that kept recurring was when a participant would put the rest of the party “on hold”.

While I don’t rely on the party line for my communications, it would seem to me to be typically inappropriate for hold music to be an option during a conference call. If you’ve got more than 2 people participating in the dialog, then one shouldn’t be able to drown the rest of them out with “on hold” music.

So, could you please consider making “on hold” music non-functional during conference calls? I can’t think of any appropriate use of allowing it during conference calls, and plenty of occasions where it was inappropriate.

Think about it. Smile

Thanks

With AppleScript support, Gizmo support could be added to Jon’s Phone Tool, which in turn would allow for Gizmo integration with a number of OS X applications (e.g. DayLite, AddressBook, Entourage, Now Contact, Palm Desktop, etc.).

Skype, Xten, and Vonage are all already supported through Jon’s Phone Tool — I’d much rather dump my Vonage account and use Gizmo full time, but without AppleScript I can’t integrate it with the rest of my system.

Lack of AppleScript for an application like this means missing out on a lot of potential - I sure hope the developers realize that and make AppleScript a top priority!

it will work even on Windows 98 or Me. It supports iLBC too.

Hopefully it wont be too long before WiMax broadband wireless Internet becomes available. It will make high speed Internet practical for deployment in rural areas. The mobile standards have recently been approved. VoIP is really going to take off with WiMax and the combination of the two may give cell phones a run for their money.

The thing that’s still stoping some of my relatives from using SIPPhone.com / GIZMOProject more are the lack of rural area codes, i.e. 928 in Arizona, as well as the requirement for bradband service. Despite living in a metro area, my grandmother cannot receive DSL (too far away from CO), and cable isn’t viable at the moment.

Apart from that, it’s very usable.

(assuming you are on windows)… If you or anyone else wants to see what Gizmo does and what Skype does, just download thsi freeware tool that let you monitor in realtime what application uses what ports on your computer:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/TcpView.html

You will see that Gizmo only using two ports while Skype will start opening additional ports to unknown domains quite fast after being started (at least on my machine).

A. Is this True?

B. If it is true, does Gizmo do the same?

Thanks Smile

Oh, yes it is true, Skype do acts as a “supernode” in order to route the information/data of other peers. It is a peer-to-peer network.

This is why I do not use it any more.

Gizmo has nothing to do with any peer-to-peer network.

Gizmo is a SIP based software i.e. it uses the sipphone.com server to connect to another Gizmo user.

So, Gizmo never uses your network bandwidth to route other people’s calls. Never !!!

News: Guidance Software Hacked, or, The Effect of Marketing on Information Risk

December 28th, 2005

I was going to write something for y’all to chew on and think about today, but this is just to fun. Guidance Software, the makers of EnCase, have been hacked. Credit cards have been stolen from their e-commerce site, apparently.
So what does this mean? Nothing. Guidance has too strong a lock on the forensic software market to damage their sales or marketshare, is my guess.
Which brings us to a subject to discuss: Compromise comes at what price, exactly? Let’s look at a few examples:
1.) DSW. Shoe store gets hacked, loses credit cards.
2.) Best Buy. Sends credit cards via 802.11b enencrytped. Loses credit cards
3.) ReevesNamePins.com, maker of Police Name Badges, hacked. Loses POLICEMAN credit cards.
4.) Choicepoint, whose CISO was on the speaking circuit as an expert in information security at the time gave information on 140,000 people to attackers.
If we look at our small sample size here and try to understand the impact, we can only externally see any impact on ReevesNamePins.com, whose website is now just a Verizon Internet placeholder. What was the impact on DSW or Best Buy? None. Choicepoint? That remains to be seen. I guess my point is that in measuring risk (outside of markets that are federally regulated and will receive significant fines) a public incident has little effect on a strong B2C brand name (or market share). In the case of ReevesNamePins, assuming that they cannot recover from the incident, their niche, commodity product and brand name recognition wasn’t strong enough to overcome the incident. The effect on Choicepoint, as a B2B with significant market share (at the time of intrusion) remains to be seen, too.
What does this mean? Small businesses, with significant competition and little customer loyalty are most at risk. Of course, they’re also the market segment that is most likely to NOT take information security seriously.

Well, this one is interesting… I wonder how many people this surprises. I, for one, am not a good one to ask, as I get most of my news from a variety of Internet sources, national and international (The Econimist, Drudge, CNN, NPR, The Guardian, mainly). Is Boing Boing a news site?
But I have been hearing a lot about how the media is conservative the media is.
On an unrelated note, shout out to my boy Bart, who sends me this. Word. To the Mother.

Not Everyone is Wendys Dave Thomas

December 28th, 2005

Today there was “sign up for a free Ferrari T-Shirt” offer from AMD. About halfway through filling out the form, AMD’s CEO started to talk to me. It’s a flash video, where he wants to let me know all about the roadmap. He’s dressed casually, as if we were just down at the coffee house discussing dual-core technologies.
Hello, I’m the CEO of AMD!
IMHO, it doesn’t work. Not everyone is Dave Thomas, Steve Jobs, or even Steve Ballmer. Some people are just very good CEO’s but not entertainers. Nice guy, I’m sure, I just think AMD could have found someone in engineering, product marketing, someone somewhere in the company…
Second: THE AMD WEBSITE MADE NOISE! Call me old fashioned but unless I ask them to, websites shouldn’t make noise. Heck, it’s bad enough that they made me load a gratuitous movie without asking - but noise?! I really do think that websites should remain as flat as possible, with links to multimedia content. With warnings about sound. So you’re not in a coffee shop trying to shut the CEO of AMD up as soon as possible. What AMD did, by loading the movie and sound and not asking me, just sending it - is that they made their CEO annoying to me. They put me in a position where my brain thought “oh, man, just shut this guy up no matter what”. And I’m betting I’m not the only one.
(for the record, I think AMD is a great company that does add value in the marketplace by keeping Intel honest)

Has Desktop Linux Already Failed, or When Did Web 2.0 Lose the Focus?

December 28th, 2005

First, I encourage you to read a weblog post, but let me give you a little background. Steve Gillmour wrote some weblog entry about “how Microsoft Office is dead”. Scoble, our favorite pro-Microsoft blogger then, in response, didn’t really counter Gillmour’s post as much gave us a sales pitch on the features of Office 12. Leave it to J. RandomBlogger (kind of like myself) to focus the discussion through the lens of the real world.

Ian Landsman’s weblog entry discussing why office isn’t dead, works for Microsoft in general. No other technology (OS X, Linux, etc) is going to supplant Microsoft technology anytime soon. Be it Office, Windows, or even Internet Explorer, the IT guys in the SMB in Boise from Ian’s post, your Uncle in Tucson, the Fortune 500, these people just don’t have the wherewithal to move from Microsoft technology to something else. Why?
Example 1.) 250 seat SMB in Boise. You’ve got two MCSEs employed as the IT department. The CEO reads an article on Linux in the Delta Airlines in-flight magazine. Says to our two MCSEs “Boys, we spent umpteen thousand dollars last year on Windows 2003 Servers, and that’s the last time I want to spend money on Microsoft Server Operating Systems. I want you to pull out Microsoft Servers and put in Linux. And just to back up my directive, I’ve cut your Server Operating System budget to $1.50.” These guys are screwed. They’ll be lucky to replace IIS with Apache, more or less Exchange or Microsoft SQL. But let’s, just for the sake of argument, say that they find their local LUG Grey Hair Wizard and he comes in cheap and replaces IIS, Exchange and SQL with open source alternatives and viola! in six months they are production ready - what happens when stuff breaks? You’ve reduced the IT department to full-time dependency on outside resources (and UNIX Grey Hairs are expensive) until some point, five years from now, the two MCSEs can actually deploy a SAMBA share all by themselves.
Despite what you may have seen, Steve Ballmer isn’t really be dancing around like Frankenstein on Crystal Meth yelling “Developers, Developers, Developers”, he was yelling “Low-Grade Admins with Technical School Degrees!”. “Developers” just has a nicer cadence.
Example 2.) Your Uncle in Tucson. You visit your Uncle in Tucson over Thanksgiving. Turns out he has a Virus and is full of spyware. You get him anti-spyware, update his anti-virus, and then switch him over to Firefox and Thunderbird. Import his bookmarks, his contacts, his email archive, everything. Hours worth of free tech support to a family member, which, if you haven’t tried it, is about as pleasant as a trip to the dentist. You go back at Christmas, only to find that he’s switched back to IE. Why? Because it saved the passwords to his home banking application and he didn’t want to look them up, his dancing purple gorilla websites didn’t work right under Firefox, this RSS thing was confusing, he likes all the pictures in the articles, etc….
Example 3.) The Fortune 500. This one is easy. Multiply Example 1 by 200, and Example 2 by 40,000. Never going to happen.
In each case, Microsoft wins because of something I call the “Silverback Effect”.
I went to go get my oil changed the other day (at a tire shop), and what happened to me is what happens to every male born after 1970 who isn’t specifically a car enthusiast. I was treated with condescension as a man and “provider for my family” because I didn’t check the air in my tires every week. You see, cars, for generations before me, were a pretty disruptive technology. Not to sound sexist, but men had to know or understand cars and how they work so that they wouldn’t feel threatened by the disruption.
If you didn’t know how breaks worked, and couldn’t replace them yourself, then you might as well sell your wife and kids to someone who could put food on the table. You were ready to be a cuckolded, impotent Gorilla who lived on the fringe of the tribal society, subsisting off of scraps of food kindly offered by the elderly females of the group.
I would guess that any significant disruptive technology is that way, simply because a lack of understanding concerning the disruption is a threat to the man as a provider. For me, I couldn’t care less about how my car works. For all practical purposes it might as well be a sewing machine to me. When it works, I don’t care how it works, I just expect it to. When it’s broken, I don’t care why, somebody just needs to fix it. I don’t have time to ready the repair manuals for my Saabs and get specialized tools and spend four hours of my own time trying to figure out how to replace a brake pad. So I just take condescension and stories about the Vietnam war from some guy at the local tire shop when I just want my oil changed. That’s what iPods are for, social isolation.
Computers are similar. The guys in Boise, your Uncle, the Fortune 500 IT department, they aren’t going to change because they feel the need to “own” the technology. They are providers. As an aside, this theory also explains why most IT/Comp sci is dominated by males - women are way too smart to really care about word processing, they just expect the computer to work when they need to write a letter. To your average MCSE, Linux guys are from this mysterious “other tribe” and Apples are for effeminate “designers” and metrosexuals.
THAT’s just how it is, and all this other pontificating about Web 2.0 and Linux on the Desktop and OS X x86 in the Enterprise, it’s all nonsense.
Of course, Windows is untenable, and even Microsoft knows that. What I guess they’ll do about it (with apologies to Cringely) in my next post tomorrow.

The Disaffected Far Left

December 28th, 2005

I hate delving into politics, but the following just blew my mind:
Today, Boing Boing had a link in which Noam Chomsky declares the following
Both political parties and the media are far to the right of the general population on a whole host of issues. And the population is just disorganized, atomized… And that’s why the media and campaigns keep away from (political) issues. They know that on issues, they’re going to lose people.
I’d like to comment on this, as it’s being upheld as righteous proclamation by the disaffected left. As a semi-interested individual who recognizes that his beliefs aren’t easily defined by a linear political spectrum, I am as concerned about how the left is being brow-beaten into irrationality as I am disturbed by the current administrations totalitarian approach to governing.
Mr. Chomsky, like those who buy and wear the “blue state” t-shirts, seems to suffer a remarkable amount of myopia. I encourage him to get out of Starbucks and visit an amusement park, high school (or college) football game, or visit a shopping mall anchored by Sears, and not Nordstroms, some swealtering sea of obese humanity, long enough to become depressed with the human “product” churned out by public education, molded by modern advertising and televised culture, amorphously shaped by fast food lunches and steakhouse dinners. I’d be astonished if he came to the same conclusion, that the majority of Americans believe in whatever manifesto he would ascribe to them. I think he’d find that away from the Volvo’s and BMW’s with Kerry/Edwards stickers, there aren’t many who are ready to join his revolution. We are still, at our heart, a Pickup Truck society. In fact, he himself recongizes this fact later on when he says,
“So therefore you have… George Bush… this pampered kid who came from a rich family and went to prep school and an elite university. And you have to present him as an ordinary guy who makes grammatical errors, which I’m sure he’s trained to make–he didn’t talk that way at Yale–and a fake Texas twang, and he’s off to his ranch to cut brush or something. It’s like a toothpaste ad. And I think a lot of people know it.”
Gore, Kerry, and Dean aren’t “Pickup Truck”. Clinton was unabashedly “El Camino”. Bush is a shiny Ford F-150 with a Mercedes hidden in the garage. Mr. Chomsky is dillusional if he thinks that the populace will respond to any other marketing of a candidate. The amount of “red state” doesn’t lie.
I kind of agree that the population is disorganized and atomized. I would use the term “compartmentalized”, however. If you follow the habits of your average American, those habits are that we wake up in our ~2,000 square feet we call home, go to work in a shiny metal box (sorry, Sting), work somewhere where we may have, at most, 5-6 semi-meaningful relationships, gett back into our shiny metal box (yelling and fuming at the idiots who get in our way), to come home and sit in front of the television where we engage in one-way bonding with the glowing images before beddy-bye. If we are disorganized it is because deep down we don’t hold to the absolute agenda of the left or right, and therefore don’t know where to put ourselves. If we are atomized, it is because we (like Mr. Chomsky) have very little interaction outside of our sphere of influence.
Finally, the really, really strange thing is his take on media bias! I can understand how he may spend all his time in academia and surround himself with left-leaning intelligencia - so he feels that the media under-represent his version of America, but I recall a day only 10 years ago, the “Republican Revolution.” The election that claimed congress for the right, and left NPR stunned to the point that it couldn’t hide it’s agenda the day after elections. The most hilarious thing about that day (one of my favorites in politics because, for good or bad, the people spoke and said “enough”) was listening to NPR’s heretofore seemingly “objective” news crew try to (direct quote) “figure out how this happened”. Does Mr. Chomsky forget that the only reason Fox News has any viewership at all is because the middle class was tired of the media pushing a “liberal agenda”?
So let me leave a word of caution to the Doctorows, Wonkette’s, Chomsky’s and Monbiot’s of the world. A word of caution not unlike I uttered to the Bush administration when it took office.
The Bush administration, just as the Clinton administration before it, bungled because it believed in it’s “mandate”. Clinton and Bush both made the mistake that the “disorganized, atomized” masses wanted everything those candidates stood for, when, in reality, they were just the lessor of two evils. So in 2008, a Democrat will win by a landslide, and the same process will happen - they will try to institute their version of the Iraq war, be it nationalized healthcare, increased welfare, whatever agenda they roll out (possibly, even withdrawal from Iraq - I’m not so sure that America loves the idea of getting out of Iraq as much as we like the idea of being there, _yet_) and be summarily jeered and lambasted by both the press and the mainstream. The pendulum will swing again, it may take two terms, but the right will then claim media bias again, underrepresentation, and all the tricks you’re pulling out now, whether you realize it or not. The right isn’t pulling it’s wool over the eyes of a left-leaning nation, just like the left wasn’t pulling the wool over the eyes of the right - we’re all just being fooled by monolithic, centralized culture that can no longer support it’s own weight.

FREE DELWIN!!!

December 28th, 2005

http://freedelwin.org/
This holiday season, I urge you to consider Delwin:
Delwin is no different than you or I. He’s a college kid who enjoys listening to some good tunes here and there. He’s shared music with friends. He’s burned cds.
Music makes Delwin smile. Well, it made him smile, until he learned that a few downloads would cost him over FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Thanks to The Eagles, Tracy Chapman, and Sting, Delwin now cries whenever he thinks of music. But what exactly was his crime? Philanthropy. The key to avoiding a subpoena like the one Del is facing is to refrain from sharing, and he knew this. Take all you want from others, but don’t let others take from you; only when you give music away for free are you illegally distributing copyrighted material. This truth tormented Delwin deep within his conscience, for he had gained so much musical wealth from the i2hub community and given none back. He felt it only right to return the favor, to open his own gates and let others enjoy his happiness. Del’s flaw was nothing more than a magnanimous display of philanthropy.
And his reward? An email notice from Princeton University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) on March 24, 2005, informing the then freshman of a pending lawsuit regarding filesharing. On April 19, Delwin received an even greater gift. He was officially served a subpoena by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
It’s important to note:
we’re not saying del’s innocent. he shared music. we all have shared music. he got caught. we didn’t. that sucks for him and thus, we should think about helping him out a bit with his woes (and get a sweet shirt in the process).
So Free Delwin, I say!

Apple and Mature Customer Evangelism

December 28th, 2005

Over at Presentation Zen (which is a great site if you don’t have it in your RSS feeds already) Garr Reynolds has a very interesting comment at the end.
*(Although you can not pay evangelist groups, such as Apple user groups, I would like to see Apple engage these user groups more and make them feel a little more “part of the team.”)
The whole “customer evangelism” as a marketing tool (at least in the modern age with technology companies) is very new. Apple is in a very unique situation. There are very few companies with as many customer evangelists as Apple (short of maybe significant multi-level marketing). Operating systems and computers are possibly the most “needy” products you and I buy. This works for them on a couple of levels - first they have an enviable supply of grassroots sales and marketers, second - they become impromptu tech support. My brother-in-law was having issues with his powerbook this weekend, and one of the first things I suggested was that he hit the Apple discussions.
Now, to the point Mr. Reynolds touches on. Apple has, historically, treated it’s fanatic users with ambivalence outside of product release time. Maybe the other edge of the razor is that customer evangelists are just a short step away from crazy. Certainly, at some point customer evangelists reach critical mass. I would hazard that many Windows users have had an experience with an arrogant or fanatical Apple evangelist that turns them off (maybe, deep down, they fear that if the product is *that* good, they’ll turn into a crazy themselves). But for whatever reason, Apple seems to only want droves of fans during product announcement (good “buzz”), or product release (lines outside the Apple store).
It’s possible that Apple just sees the whole thing growing organically, and that any further interference by Apple PR/Marketing will work to make the movement in-genuine.
But in terms of Apple engaging user groups - yes, especially technical areas.
Apple needs to do more in open source development. The difference between Apple pre-OS X and Apple now is that deep geeks are using Powerbooks. There’s a great resource of talented individuals who now drink the kool aid. To foster development, Apple should employ folks to evangelize and lead development of open source projects. You see IBM and Google and many other companies making significant contributions, employing developers or even entire teams of developers whose purpose is to provide structure and resources to open source projects. And given the lack of features or even upgrades in many of the included applications in OS X (Safari, iCal, iSync, iChat, iPhoto all come to mind), opening a few projects might not be the end of the world, especially as they coincide with open standards and similarly mature Linux desktop technologies (chat, calendar, browsers).
Second, Apple needs to never, ever pull another dashboard/konfabulator. Now I’m not privy to any discussions the Konfab team may have had with Apple about purchasing the company/technology. But I do have bad will towards Apple for essentially commoditizing a great product built by a two man team. Would it kill them to give the guys at Konfab a couple of million dollars? Watson and Sherlock - same thing. And it’s not like there’s a corporate policy against it; see iTunes and Soundjam and Audion.
What do you think? Where and how should Apple better engage it’s willing development community? I say they start at .Mac, and with Hula and Tracks.
Outside of .Mac - Rails has the ability to really hurt Java and .Net. WebObjects needs to throw out everything they’ve ever done, and become the predominant Rails development tool.

Most Obnoxious Ringtone Ever

December 27th, 2005

There I was, minding my own business at a coffee shop, when suddenly I hear a symphony of butt-trumpets blasted at nearly 15 decibles…
At first, I ignore the rude coffee shop patron, and pretend not to notice his out-of-control flatulance.
Then it happened again, only this time it was followed by “This is Mark… Yeah, 1:30 is good for me. Ok, see you then.”
The man had a fart ringtone / rudetone.
I’m serious.
This is something you would expect a “Jack Black” type to have as a ringtone, not some dude in a nice suite working on a laptop in a coffee shop.
Get your fart ringtone here.

What should you do if you lose your phone?

December 27th, 2005

Some people lose things more than other people do. I lose my keys at least twice a day. I have actually maxed out my cell phone insurance policy– they give you three replacements per year.
Not to overstate the obvious, but there is a procedure one must go through when a cell phone is lost.
You would not believe how many people think they are not held responsible for fraudulent calls made after they lose their phone.
If you read the fine print of your conract, you will find that you are, in fact, responsible for calls made from your phone, unless they are made after you have called the service provider to report the phone missing.
The typical scenario plays out like this:
You go out to the club, to work, to the grocery store or any other place you might go during a typical day. You realize at some point during the day that you don’t have your phone with you. You think it might be in the car. You check the car– it’s not there. Maybe it’s in your desk drawer? You rush back up to the office to find no trace of your cell phone. You mentally retrace your steps. You had your phone on your way to work… you were using it in line at Starbucks… You think you had it after Starbucks, but you’re not sure. You think to yourself that you will stop by Starbucks on the way home and see if they have your phone.
Now here’s the big question:
When should you call your phone company and report your phone missing?

You should call them the minute you suspect your phone might be lost.
It may be inconvenient to miss a voicemail or two, but it’s even more inconvenient to have a $1,500 phone bill that you are now responsible for.
Here is the procedure:
You think you may have lost your Cingular cell phone.
You call them the moment you notice it’s missing.
They temporarily suspend your service, and advise you that you have 30 days to find your phone, or get a new one before they cancel your service.
If they cancel your service, and you are still under contract, they will still charge you an early termination fee, which is usually about $200.
They will offer you a new phone at a huge discount. Most phone companies have refurbished phones available at under $50 for people who have lost their phones. (If you take advantage of this offer, you will probably have to agree to a new one or two year contract.)
If you have insurance on your phone, this is a good time to use it. (Most insurance companies will still charge you a deductible, which is usually about $40.)
All of this is a pain in the neck, but it’s a lot better than the frustration of having to pay a huge phone bill.
Remember, the service provider will suspend your service at no charge when you lose your phone. If you find it again, it only takes a minute or two for them to reinstate your service.
Also remember that while your service is in suspension, your contract is also suspended, meaning that if you suspend for thirty days, that time will be added to the end of your contract. It’s also important to note that you are not paying your monthly service charge while your service is in suspension. They will pro-rate your bill, and airtime.
If you suspend your service, you don’t have the same amount of minutes you would during a normal month.
Save yourself a hassle! Suspend your service when you lose your phone!
If you have questions about this issue, leave them in the comments section below.

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukka! Happy Kwanza!

December 27th, 2005

I got a brand new 60G iPod with video.
Did anyone get a sweet new celly?
Cell phones are tough to give as Christmas presents. They can be more of a burden than a gift, unless you are planning on paying the monthly bill, and being responsible for the contract.
(I gave a cell phone as a gift three years ago, and I’m still paying the bill… granted, it’s for my little sister who is in college…)
It is possible to give a cell phone without service attached. The easiest way to do that is to buy one directly from the manufacturer. Just make sure the phone is compatible with the service your loved one already has, or with service that is available in their area. (Not all cell service providers are available in all areas.)
You will shell out twice as much as you would if you got the phone from the service provider, but at least you aren’t stuck with the contract.
Merry Christmas!

Woman Eats Phone - And She Wasnt Even Hungry

December 27th, 2005

I’ve been really angry before. I’ve even felt like a bit like throwing my cell phone from the car window as I argue with the the phone company while barrelling down the highway at 80 MPH… But I’ve never felt angry enough to actually try to eat my phone.
This girl must have been really ticked.
We’ve all been there. Your spouse or loved one drives you to the breaking point, and you have no other choice than to swallow their cell phone.
A Blue Springs, Missouri woman was the latest victim of cell phone rage. She swallowed her boyfriend’s mobile in mid-argument because “she didn’t want the boyfriend to have it,” according to a report in The Kansas City Star. The phone became lodged in the lady’s throat, and she was rushed to the emergency room.
“Police responded to a call about a non-breathing person about 4:50 a.m. in the 3000 block of Southwest U.S. 40,” the paper reported. “Police arrived and found that the 24-year-old woman was having trouble breathing. Her identity was not released.” The poor lass still had the phone wedged in her throat when she got to the hospital. ®

Top 10 Worst Places To Lose Your Cell Phone

December 27th, 2005

Where are the top ten most annoying and tragic places to lose your cell phone? It’s always annoying when you lose your cell phone, especially if you’re not sure whether you are going to find it again.
Some situations are worse than others. I’ve compiled a list of these, least annoying to worst:
10. Your Mother In-Law’s House
Yeah, it sucks that you have to go back there and endure another long conversation about when you are going to give her those grandchildren, at least she’s your mother-in-law, and can be counted on to put your cell in a safe place for you to retrieve.
:: Chance of recovery: 95-100% (Depending on whether your mother-in-law conforms to mom-in-law stereotypes)
9. Restaurant
So, you left your brand new, hot-pink, RAZR on the table at Chili’s. You should be so grateful to never see that phone again, but I doubt anyone would actually want to steal it, so you might just be stuck with it.
Busboys are usually pretty good about chasing you out the door, sometimes across the parkinglot to deliver your forgotten personal items. I think this practice is in the “Universal Busboy Code of Conduct” manual. If the busboy doesn’t get to you in time, call the restaraunt. They probably have a lost-and-found.
:: Chance of recovery: 80-95%

8. Roof Of Your Car
We’ve all done it. Especially you wack-o’s who use those gigantic Bluetooth headsets. (Aren’t you worried about growing golf ball sized tumors?)
You’re on the phone, which you’ve left on the roof of your car, and you don’t realize it until the call disconnects when your Treo explodes on the ground after breaking quickly to avoid murdering a squirrel. At least you know for sure you have to buy a new one. Hopefully you had insurance.
:: Chance of recovery: 0-100% (Depending on where it lands, and if you remember before it falls… and if you have insurance)
7. Your Ex-Boyfriend/Girlfriend’s House
You’ve had a knock-down-drag-out that lasted until 2am. It’s over. You storm out of the house. You are NEVER seeing him/her again! But then, oh s**t! Where’s my cell?
:: Chance of recovery: 0-15% (Depending on whether you can suck up long enough to get it back)
6. Airport Security
You’ve stood in line for 30 minutes to check in. You’ve stood in line for 45 minutes to go through security. Then you get the dreaded tap: “Sir, you’ve been randomly selected for a thourough search of your belongings.”
In the process of removing your coat, shoes, belt and explaining why your nipples beap every time the metal detector passes over them, your brand new Amp’d Jet phone disappears. You don’t realize it until you hear your name over the airport loud speaker.
:: Chance of recovery: 50-100% (Depending on how much time you have before your flight leaves. If you don’t immediately retrieve it from security, it is destroyed)
5. Airplane
After powering your phone off, you stow it in the seat pocket in front of you. You eat your pretzels and swallow your ounce of soda. You zonk out and drool on the shoulder of the poor guy stuck in the middle seat. You wake up and dash off the plane to catch your connection. You are halfway to Atlanta before you realize your phone is somewhere between Houston and Newark.
:: Chance of recovery: 0-15% (Depending on whether you were traveling in first-class)
4. Bus or Subway
Kiss your phone goodbye. Call your service provider, suspend service and get a new one… And do it quick, or you may see a $400 long distance bills made by the sweet granny sitting next to you, who just happens to have family in Singapore.
:: Chance of recovery: 0-2%
3. Jail
No, not the drunk tank or temporary holding cell. I’m talking county jail. If you lose your phone there, you must not have had one at all. Suspend your service and consider changing your number.
:: Chance of recovery: 0%
2. Private Toilet
It happens more often than you would think.
You’ve got your phone in your shirt pocket, you lean over to flush, and plop-swirl-byebye goes your phone.
:: Chance of recovery: 50-75%
:: Chance of it ever working again: 0-2% (Depending on whether it’s waterproof)
And the absolute worse place to lose your cell phone:
…Drumroll, please.
…Ok, you can stop now.
1. The toilet at a bus station (Or any public place for that matter)

If you go in after it, you will probably catch some horrible disease, turn green and die.
Besides, you can flush a small child down most of those public toilets. Once you flush, it’s gone.
:: Chance of recovery: 0% (Don’t even think about sticking your hand in there!)

New York: 1, T-Mobile: -$135K

December 27th, 2005

New York City doesn’t play around when it comes to the protection of their consumers. When a cell phone service provider promises to give you a sweet deal in New York City, they are legally obligated to come through on that deal, fine print or none.
Cell phone service providers are famous for offerring all kinds of “great deals” to reel in consumers, only to exclude most of those benefits in fine print.
New York City has the right idea. Wouldn’t it be great if this were federal law?
T-Mobile USA, Inc. has paid New York City $135,000 and agreed to fully comply with the city’s Consumer Protection Law. The settlement follows the agency’s lawsuit charging consumers were misled through deceptive cell phone advertisements.
“We’re pleased that T-Mobile has committed to full compliance and done right by consumers,” Jonathan Mintz, DCA Acting Commissioner, said. “New York City law prohibits companies from running advertisements that promise great deals in the headlines only to take them away in the fine print. We’re another step closer to ensuring consumers purchasing wireless products from all companies will be protected.”
The DCA filed suit in July 2005 against three major wireless companies — T-Mobile U.S.A., Nextel Communications Inc., and Sprint Spectrum L.P. — in New York Supreme Court for pitching cell phone products and services in deceptive advertisements that misled consumers. Nextel and Sprint have since merged and continue in litigation.

Cell Phone, ID Card, Credit Card All-In-One

December 27th, 2005

It’s exciting that they are testing this technology in the US. People are already using their cell phones as credit cards in parts of Europe and Japan.
Japanese university students have their photo ID cards stored on their cell phones. Finland is even mulling over the idea of giving people the option of having their national ID card on their cell phone, instead of needing to carry the traditional plastic card.
I came across this press release on the Nokia website.
A group of industry-leading companies today announced an advanced Near Field Communication (NFC) trial for mobile phone applications including contactless payments, mobile content and premium arena services at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The trial is the first large-scale test of next-generation mobile phone applications in North America, and is the result of a collaboration between Chase, Cingular Wireless, Nokia, Philips, Visa, and ViVOtech, along with Atlanta Spirit, parent company of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers and Philips Arena. The trial has been designed to enable a secure, wireless system that simplifies payment and services for arena visitors.
During the trial, Atlanta Thrashers and Hawks season ticket holders with Chase-issued Visa credit accounts and Cingular Wireless accounts can make contactless payments at concession stands and access mobile content from numerous locations throughout the arena. Users can purchase items by simply holding their Nokia 3220 mobile phones equipped with Philips’ NFC semiconductor chips and ViVOtech software near a secure terminal. Approximately 150 contactless point of sale (POS) readers have been deployed by ViVOtech throughout Philips Arena. For mobile content downloads, Cingular Wireless will be the carrier that enables these services to take place over its digital wireless network.
“By 2010, we expect that over 50 percent of all mobile handsets will incorporate Near Field Communication chips to enable short-range, easy and secure transactions,” said Erik Michielsen, director at market analyst firm ABI Research. “As a result, consumers will be able to download content by simply holding their phone close to a poster or advertising billboard. Users canpurchase merchandise, food, tickets, and have these transactions charged to a credit card using account information stored in the mobile phone. The NFC implementation at Philips Arena demonstrates NFC stakeholders, including chipmakers, card issuers, device makers, mobile carriers, and content providers, are progressively more willing to collaborate on NFC solution development. This type of co-development is essential to NFC market growth and maturation.”

Bad Froggy, No Cookie

December 27th, 2005

From the Register UK:
One of the firms behind the “Crazy Frog” ringtone service has been fined £40,000 for misleading punters about the real cost of the service.
Service provider mBlox was also ordered to refund all 338 people who complained to premium rate services (PRS) regulator ICSTIS. They had thought that when they bought the ringtone it was a one-off payment for a single download and were unaware that they were, in fact, signing up to an expensive premium rate subscription service.
In the end the panel overseeing the hearing found that the promotions required “a lot of interpretation, application and patience from consumers” to figure out what they were signing up to.
I havn’t heard any complaints about people here in North America being mislead into subscriptions.
What about you? Have you ever gotten more then you bargained for? Ever thought you were buying a single ringtone only to discover later that you’d been signed up for more services?

T-Mobile, 3G, and the US of A

December 27th, 2005

From Engadget:
It’s going to happen eventually that T-Mobile’s going to add 3G to their service offerings in the US, but while most people are speculating that it’ll be later than sooner, apparently their SVP of Engineering Operations Neville Ray told BetaNews they’re already in testing in some markets (he wouldn’t say which and what network technology they’re trying, be it UMTS or HSDPA), and that “by the end of 2006, and definitely in 2007, [they]’d be able to bring 3G services to the market.”
T-Mobile ought to be careful though. Between this and their recent buy up of a bunch of 850MHz network capacity across a large swath of the central states, we think some people might actually get the impression that they’re trying to expand their services and be a competitive player in the US cellphone market.
Why shouldn’t T-Mobile position themselves to be a competitive player in the US cell phone market?
After all, if it weren’t for Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), we wouldn’t even have GSM in north America. T-Mobile had been providing GSM to Europe ten years before American phone companies even thought about using the technology.
T-Mobile is already the fourth largest mobile phone provider in the world. Cingular, the largest in the United States, is only number ten among the world’s phone companies with the most subscribers.
I don’t know if you remember how rough the initial change was, from TDMA to GSM, but it was a slow process, and Cingular is still working out many of the kinks. Cingular (and then AT&T wireless) got a lot of help from Deutsche Telekom to make the US GSM network actually work for it’s subscribers.
I wouldn’t be surpised at all if T-Mobile were to become the leader in US 3G services. It seems to be better at providing technology that works well for its customers.

Finding the Best Travel Credit Cards

December 27th, 2005

Finding the Best Travel Credit Cards

While many airlines offer enticements of frequent flier miles, there
is a second prevalent option - travel credit cards - for discounting your airline
travels. There is a very solid reason that these travel credit cards are so
popular for avid travelers.

These travel reward credit
cards
- i.e., those with a feature that lets you earn air mileage discounts
as you make purchases with your travel credit card - offer a double dipping
opportunity. What this means, simply, is that you now have two ways to earn
mileage discounts with the same trip - if you use your travel credit card to
book the flight. You can earn credit not only towards your flight, but also
towards an auto rental or a hotel room. You can also get mileage credit for
purchases with your travel credit card that are not flight-related, such as
meals and shopping from retailers.

Many credit cards work as travel credit cards, offering miles or points for
your purchases with the card. There are four types of travel
credit cards
to consider. You might want to choose a credit card that
has partnered with a hotel chain or specific airline. This may well be a good
choice if your travel destinations are consistent, and you use the same airline
continually; or if you have a preference in hotel chain. You might choose a
common brand of travel credit card, such as American Express, Visa, MasterCard,
Discover or Diners Club. Your local bank, or another reputable banking firm
might issue its own credit card with a program that offers travel rewards. You
could also choose a debit card that acts as a travel credit card.

It’s difficult to say in general which are the best
travel credit cards
. So much depends on individual need. Most folks
new to travel credit cards start with what are known as co-branded or affinity
travel credit cards - those specifically tied to the frequent flyer offering
of a certain airline. So, let’s look at a couple of those.

American Airlines, for instance, has a partnership with Citibank, offering
the AAdvantage mile program. With this American Airlines travel credit card,
the traveler card user earn one AAdvantage mile for each dollar she or he charges
on the travel credit card.

United Airlines has a similar travel credit card offer, called Mileage Plus
First Card, and Delta Airlines has an American Express Optima mileage frequent
flier travel credit card. Northwest’s travel credit card is called the WorldPerks
Visa. Most affinity travel credit cards are MasterCard or Visa, Delta being
the most notable exception.

While travel credit cards certainly offer great mileage perks to those who
fly the friendly skies often, they also have the disadvantage of comparatively
hefty annual fees, however. The fees can range anywhere from $25 to $125. Besides
credit history, the other factor that determines your travel credit card annual
fee or your annual percentage rate (APR) is your choosing a standard, a gold
or a platinum level card. APRs are high for travel credit cards as well. You’ll
usually end up paying 15 to 18 percent.

Selecting The Right Credit Card

December 27th, 2005

Not all credit cards are created equal. There are many

various types of credit cards, and if you are looking

to apply for a credit card, it may be difficult to decide which type of card is best for you.

In this article, we will look at several popular types of credit cards, to help you figure out which type of credit

card meets your unique needs.

Low-Interest Credit Cards
These credit cards are often useful if you are currently carrying a balance on some of your current

credit cards. Low Interest credit cards, also know as balance transfer credit cards, are offered at

significantly lower interest rates than what you may be used to. They are good for transferring

balances to a new card at a lower rate. Often times, this will allow you to pay off your balance in

a shorter amount of time, and for less interest.

Rewards Credit Cards
As the credit card industry becomes more and more competitive, companies are scrambling to get and

keep cardholders and they are willing to bribe you to use their cards. This is where rewards cards

come in. Each program has their own rules, but they all work in a similar fashion. By using your

rewards credit card, you accumulate points that can then be redeemed for prizes, and sometimes even

cash. There are many options available as to what type of reward cards you can
choose. If you use credit cards frequently anyways, you might as well get something for it, right?

Bad Credit Credit

Cards
Even if you have poor credit, you can still be approved for a credit card. Now, credit cards offered

to people with bad credit often times have much more restrictive terms, higher fees, lower limits

and a higher interest rate. If your credit is particular poor, you may have to go with a secured

credit card where by you put down a security deposit, or prepay your credit limit. Why do that?

Because, by using one of these credit cards and diligently paying your bill on time, you can

actually improve your credit and before long you will be eligible for lower rates through a

traditional credit card.

Student Credit

Cards
These credit cards often have a lower limit than their more grown up counterparts, making them a

perfect “starter” credit card for students. Young people can learn how to control debt without the

risk of getting in too deep. As you can see, there are many choices in credit cards.

By choosing the right credit card for your particular situation, you can build your credit in a

responsible way and enjoy perks that suit your lifestyle. Apply for a credit card here. more…
