Harry Potter and my interviews mentioned on Media Watch

Media Watch is an Australian program that is somewhat like an ombudsman but doesn’t have anything except public pressure to help fix errors in the media. In the episode just aired, they covered the Harry Potter controversy and looked at how the lawsuits were flying and how media establishments ignored them in general, feeling they have no basis.

My interview on ABC radio, in which I showed reluctance to reveal any plot details due to the fear of lawsuits, was excerpted.

The ‘evils’ of Harry Potter

I have been astounded that some segments of the community have conducted campaigns against the Harry Potter books claiming they condone evilness, are a step toward satan worship, etc. Clearly these people have never read the books. One comment I received today shows that the anti-HP movement is still in force, even though I hadn’t heard much from them lately:

I just want to say thanks! My mum won’t let me read the HP books anymore (she’s really religious and thinks that I’ll turn demonic and worship Satan or something by reading the books) so it’s really helpful to me that I found a site where I can at least know what’s going on so I won’t have to get the book by other sources…Thanks again!!!:)

I am interested in what you think about this. How can it possibly be that people truly believe the Harry Potter books are anti-religious? Can anybody provide me with example quotes to support that argument? My view is that the books actually promote morality and goodness quite strongly so I am bewildered by the contrary argument…

Also, how do we reconcile the Christian right attacks on Harry Potter when even the Vatican has come out in praise of the books for “teaching children the difference between good and evil”?

Finished reading Harry Potter 5

Well, I just made it to the end of Harry Potter 5… and I’m still not going to reveal any specific details but it’s quite a whirlwind ride.

Once again, the book seems to be rushed to a conclusion and there are many unanswered questions, but we already know there are at least two more books to go…

Did I just say at least? Am I implying that the story has been nicely set up for books beyond number 7? Hmmmm…..

Why is there an embargo on Harry Potter 5?

In an earlier post, I suggested reasons why bookstore owners might want to break an embargo on the release date.

I thought I should get back to the topic and explain why the embargo is actually important. Essentially, the embargo helps small and independent bookstores. When a bestseller is released, distributors typically deliver books to the largest stores first. If there is no embargo, those stores can get the books on the shelves before the independents have even received their copies - and those smaller stores may have to wait days before they get their copies, by which time, the market could be considerably reduced. Even more damage can be done by customers going to the independents asking for the books and not being able to buy them. Those customers then get the impression that independents simply can’t stock the books the customers want to buy. This loss of faith in the independents is catastrophic for their business.

After considerable lobbying, independents have been able to secure embargoes to prevent the larger stores gaining a competitive advantage purely due to their size and the preference of distributors to deal with large quantities.

So the embargo really is a big deal. Independent bookstores are one of the last bastions of good and diverse literature and do need to be protected. (I’m not saying all large bookstores are evil - just that by their nature, they are unable to stock many of the titles that discerning readers may find valuable.)

I spoke with some independent bookstore owners today and they are very disappointed with the independent that sold me my copy of HP5 - they think that bookkeeper should have known better and is doing the industry a disservice.

As such, I am sticking to my guns in not revealing the location of the bookstore that sold me the copy and I am also not revealing specific plot elements.

Newspaper interview

I was at the pub after work this evening and happened to look at my mobile phone to notice I had missed half a dozen calls. They turned out to be (along with three emails) from a journalist who had heard one of my radio interviews and wanted to talk about the book. We chatted for a while - me slurring my words - her finding it all very amusing.

The best quote from the article is likely to be that I would have finished reading the book except that I went to the pub… But both she and I are Australian and I used to write for her newspaper so I don’t really mind that story getting out. My parents and grandmother will find it amusing, no doubt.

I’m going to respect the embargo on specific details of the story and all my comments are based on impressions I get from reading the book rather than being specific reports on the details. Legal action on pre-release reviews

I heard stories today that Scholastic are looking at taking legal against USA Today for printing their review of HP5 in their Friday issue when the embargo lasted until the Friday night. The review didn’t give much away but was clearly written by somebody who had read the whole book. (And seeing as I had spoken with that journalist prior to the review, I know for sure that she had read the book… don’t ask me how she got the book and I won’t have to tell you any lies ) more…

I should have mentioned when it came out that we published a World Year of Physics special issue of symmetry.
The cover
has generated much interest with various places requesting
permission to use it on posters, in magazines, and all over the place.
It’s not your usual science magazine cover and I was a little nervous
about running with it but it has been wildly successful. We won’t do
that every time but we are going to stretch the boundaries of what you
see in science magazines. (I should say hi to the great designers at Sandbox Studio who do the design work with us.)

Some of the highlights:
-
a photo essay of Stephon Alexander (who is also a Quantum Diarist) (photos taken by my friend Teresa, and you can even see the back of my head in one of the shots)
- a wacky essay about a non-physicist visiting my workplace, SLAC (hi Allan, I’ll come and visit you down in Costa Rica soon)
- a feature on the search for ultra-high energy cosmic rays in Argentina
- the strange Einstein paraphenalia you can find (not all of it is mine), including the only known verse to include the phrase “Einstein porn”
- E=mc^2 in 60 seconds
- a page of Einstein’s handwritten manuscript including the earliest known mention of E=mc^2
- a look at Einstein’s papers of one hundred years ago

But you’re going to have to search through the issue to find the face off between Einstein and Godzilla…

50 book challenge - 2005 edition

Like last year, I’m mentioning the 50 book challenge.
The idea is simple, read 50 books in the calendar year and keep a list
of them on your blog (or even offline if you don’t have a public web
presence!)

Last year,
I did an appalling job of keeping track of the books I read, primarily
because I had a crazily busy year, what with a magazine to launch and
all… However, I did easily surpass the 50 book mark, pretty much
within 6 months. I kept reading at close to that rate for the rest of
the year but didn’t get around to recording everything. I suspect that
will happen again this year but at least I’m beginning.

The year has gotten off to a strong start because I had my first
vacation in three years and I was able to lie on the beach and read for
a good chunk of it. And so January’s list will probably be longer than
most months’ although much of the reading was done over four days based
on the books I was given for Christmas and my birthday.

If you are keeping a list of books you’re reading, leave a note with a link to it in the comments to this post.

Perhaps the strangest thing to come out of my book list from last year
is that I was contacted by a public library in New Jersey that wanted
to use extracts of my list for a brochure they are producing on the 50
book challenge.

When particle physicists blog - Quantum Diaries

Launched today is a new collaborative blog that will run for the duration of the World Year of Physics. It is called Quantum Diaries and has about 25 particle physicists from around the world blogging their lives, inside physics and out.

It is well worth checking out - there are some good writers in among
the group and you get a taste for what it is like to be a physicists
working and traveling internationally.

The bloggers contribute in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish and
Japanese that I have noticed so far but English is dominant. (I like
multi-language blogs even when I can’t read all the languages!)

New physics magazine

“Incidentally, I have a guess about the Harry/Hermione relationship; I think it will mirror the Luke/Leia relationship. But who knows? ”
I guess I shouldn’t spoil it for you and tell you what happens in Book VI… I just started in on number II after having read VI and I. I made the mistake of reading the last one first and finding out what all these other books build up to. I’ve gone back to the first one and am working my way forward now.
I definitely agree, they are very entertaining and well written. Having read Book VI, it’s interesting to go back to her earlier books to see how far she’s come as a writer. The first one was good, but story in the later book seems to be much more fleshed out than the first ones. Just looking at the size of the books you could gather as much I guess, but some writers fill 700 pages because that’s what they were commissioned to do; Rowlings did it because the story needed it.

We previously only knew of five actors who were confirmed for the fifth movie, but we can now make a few additions to that list after hearing from the actors themselves at the world and domestic premieres of GOF.

Although he told us at the London premiere he wasn’t sure if he would be returning for OOTP, Warner Bros. has now confirmed that Tom Felton will indeed reprise the role of Draco Malfoy in the movie.

GoF DvD Releases

January 10th, 2006

Warner Bros. has recently announced that April 11th will be the release date for the Goblet of Fire High-Definition DvD. High-Definition movies will only play in special DvD players, so if you do not have a High-Definition DvD player you should probably NOT go buy the High-Definition version of the movie. You may not have to wait long for the regular DvD release. Although nothing is confirmed yet, it is rumored that the regular DvD versions will be release on April 4th. We will let you know when the regular DvD version release date is when it is officially announced. more…

New Scans/Deleted Scenes from GoF & DvD Release

Pablo from HarryLatino.com has heard from someone who worked on Goblet of Fire that the following scenes were filmed then deleted, but will be on the DvD:

**SCENE 1: Dumbledore asks his pupils to welcome Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students. All the Hogwarts students then start to sing the school song.

**SCENE 2: A Durmstrang student asks a girl to go with him to the Yule Ball. She says yes, and two of their friends make gestures in the background.

**SCENE 3: Harry tries to speak with Cho Chang, but as she is constantly surrounded by friends, he doesn’t get the opportunity.

**SCENE 4: Flitwick introduces the Weird Sisters at the Yule Ball. The lead singer speaks with the audience and then starts the first song.

**SCENE 5: Karkaroff tells Snape about the mark of his arm. Snape ignores him and removes house points from Fawcet and Stebbins, who briefly appear in the scene. Snape doesn’t care about what Karkaroff has to say.

**SCENE 6: Mr. Crouch and Harry are speaking. Mad-Eye appears and Barty quickly leaves.

**SCENE 7: The trio speak about the death of Mr. Crouch. Ron thinks that Fudge will prevent the story from leaking out to the public. Hermione believes his death, Harry’s scar burning, and the Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup are related. She recommends Harry goes to visit Dumbledore.

**SCENE 8: The trio speak about what Karkaroff was showing Snape on his arm. Hermione asks Harry which potion ingredients Snape accused him of stealing and realizes they are the ingredients needed for the Polyjuice Potion.

The Goblet of Fire DvD is reportedly to be released on March 7th.

Big Mistakes

A recent list as seen on Hollywodd.com named “The Top 10 2004 movies with the most mistakes”. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is said to contain 232 mistakes and camra sightings, putting the $760 million installment on the top of the list. Some of the mistakes include:

…the moment Snape catches Harry in school at night and takes him to Lupin’s office, which is bright and sunny. Another embarrassing error occurs when Harry and Hermione travel through time–she tells him it’s half-past seven, but the clock strikes the bells for the hour.

Have you read The Dark Is Rising Sequence? I was browsing a Harry Potter discussion forum when I found a reference to this series.
Written by Susan Cooper, The Dark Is Rising Sequence consists of five books aimed at a teenaged audience. The first book, Over Sea, Under Stone, published in 1965, begins the story of siblings Simon, Jane, and Barnabas Drew, who discover a treasure map. They embark on a quest to find a grail that’s been hidden for over 1,000 years and eventually confront the forces of evil.
The series sounded like a great combination of fantasy and mystery, so I bought the box set last week. The books run between 125-275 pages, so the series will probably be a fast read. I’ll post a review sometime this week.
If you’ve read the books, you may post a spoiler-free review in the comment section.
Update (1/3): These stories are whetting my appetite for more Christian fantasy. Fascinating stuff. I’m on Book 2 of the five-book series. More later.

Snape�s Unbreakable Vow(s)

In light of Severus Snape’s atrocious treatment of Harry Potter, not to mention the fact that he killed Albus Dumbledore, many fans wonder why Dumbledore trusted him and why Snape protected Harry, a boy he clearly hates, for the past six years.
I can’t remember where I read this theory, but someone surmised that Snape may have made an Unbreakable Vow to protect Harry, which is why Dumbledore was certain of his loyalty and the reason he protected the boy wizard.
We know that in Book 6, Snape made an Unbreakable Vow with dark witch Narcissa Malfoy. Apparently, Snape vowed to kill Dumbledore and protect her teenaged son Draco if he were unable to do it. Because of the vow, he was forced to kill a man he obviously cared about and protect a rotten kid like Draco. The same could be said of Snape’s protection of young Harry. I haven’t fleshed this out yet; I just wanted to get these thoughts down.
Also floating around is the idea that Snape made a “general” Unbreakable Vow of loyalty to Dumbledore, but not specifically to protect Harry. Interesting…

Narnia Review

Update: Here’s another, way-better-than-mine review of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe over at Biblical Christianity.

It was excellent! Better than Goblet of Fire.
I’ve just returned from seeing The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and I loved it from the opening scene to the closing.
The movie added a few scenes that weren’t in the book, but it was still enjoyable for a purist like me. In fact, I think the WWII blitzkrieg opening, though not in the book, was very effective in establishing the characters and subsequent action.
All the young actors were good, especially the boy who played Edmund. He was appropriately naughty and heroic. Tilda Swinton as the White Witch gave me chills, and her seduction of and cruelty to Edmund were compelling. The musical score was hauntingly beautiful.
Is anyone here old enough to remember the movie Candleshoe? I think that was the first “English manor” kids movie I ever watched. British children’s movies have a certain charm that American movies don’t. The English accents, an air of formality, cavernous mansions, and dark and dreary scenery remind me of Agatha Christie’s “cozy” mysteries, some of my favorite books.
The Christian imagery is even more obvious on screen. In fact, you’d have to be completely ignorant of the Bible to miss it.
I give “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” a thumbs-up, and I can’t wait for the inevitable movie adaptations of the rest of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books.

There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling’s wildly popular series–no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

* Harry’s first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys’ house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry’s first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry’s first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader’s first full introduction to Rowling’s world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry’s experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys’ garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores–gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests “Gerroff me! Gerroff me!”), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden–this delightful scene highlights Rowling’s clever and witty genius.
* Harry’s first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron’s attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys’.
* Harry’s first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry’s brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s behavior in Professor Trelawney’s Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling’s books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin’s classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione’s disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling’s fourth book addresses issues about growing up–the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum’s crush on Hermione–and Ron’s objection to it.
* Malfoy’s “Potter Stinks” badge.
* Hermione’s creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling’s fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry’s outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry’s anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry’s frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry’s detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho’s painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry’s Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore’s confession to Harry.

It’s been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero’s non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief… or will it?

And the sports paraphernalia on offer includes rosettes “squealing the names of the players” as well as “tiny models of Firebolts that really flew, and collectible figures of famous players, which strolled across the palm of your hand, preening themselves.” Needless to say, the two teams are decidedly different, down to their mascots. Bulgaria is supported by the beautiful veela, who instantly enchant everyone–including Ireland’s supporters–over to their side. Until, that is, thousands of tiny cheerleaders engage in some pyrotechnics of their own: “The leprechauns had risen into the air again, and this time, they formed a giant hand, which was making a very rude sign indeed at the veela across the field.”

Long before her fourth installment appeared, Rowling warned that it would be darker, and it’s true that every exhilaration is equaled by a moment that has us fearing for Harry’s life, the book’s emotions running as deep as its dangers. Along the way, though, she conjures up such new characters as Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, a Dark Wizard catcher who may or may not be getting paranoid in his old age, and Rita Skeeter, who beetles around Hogwarts in search of stories. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that David Yates will direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Yates has previously directed a number of British television movies. Harry Potter packs an emotional punch

A word of caution to all those hard-core fans about to dive into the latest adventures of Harry Potter: There will be tears.

Yours.

It’s odd to think of the next-to-last Potter book as being a turning point but, in so many ways, that’s the truth about “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.'’ J K Rowling’s hero is no longer a boy wizard; he’s a young man, determined to seek out and face a young man’s challenges.

Veteran Potter readers shouldn’t worry about outgrowing the series, but younger fans may find that it has grown up too much.

All ages, however, should be assured: Rowling’s latest has lost none of the charm, intelligence and hilarity that have catapulted her series into publishing history. But this book also has a poignancy, complexity and sadness we probably couldn’t have imagined when we started reading the first one. There’s an emotional punch you won’t believe.

When Book 5, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,'’ ended, we learned what made the evil wizard Lord Voldemort kill Harry’s parents and try to kill him as an infant– a prophecy that said Harry could vanquish him, and that one of them would have to kill the other in order to survive.

Thanks to Harry and friends, the entire magical community knows that Voldemort is back.

And how. He and his Death Eater followers have unleashed so much violence and murder that even the head of the non-magical world has to be told about it.

Sooner than in her previous books, the action shifts Harry away from his awful relatives, the Dursleys, and right back to friends Ron and Hermione and all the others at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As usual, there are new faces– the new teacher of defence against the Dark Arts gives Harry some serious concerns.

As sixth-year students, Harry and company have moved on from the magical basics into more complicated studies, preparing for their after-school careers. But, it’s not just the work that’s gotten more complicated. It’s everything.

Friendships change, love arrives (this, thank goodness, should FINALLY end all those Internet fan site arguments about who is going to hook up with whom) and Harry learns a lot about his enemy– about his past, and about a potential weakness.

We also learn about Harry, about the man he is turning into, his character and his strength of will. But it wouldn’t be Hogwarts without strangeness and mystery.

Harry has his suspicions about who’s trying to do what, and it all erupts in the end. Rowling shows off her mastery, leading us down a path with certain clues and still managing to blindside us about who turns on whom and who doesn’t.

And, yes, there is another MAJOR death. Seriously major. Break out the tissues. No matter how well you think you know these books, don’t assume you really know who anyone is, or what they are and aren’t capable of.

This is a powerful, unforgettable set-up for the finale. The hardest thing about “Half-Blood Prince'’ is where it leaves us– in mourning for who has been lost, anxious to learn how Rowling will wrap up a saga that millions wish would go on and on.

Book 6 - The Half-Blood Prince———-Verified Information

The following is a list of facts that we know about book six, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

From JKRowling.com:
- The link between Chamber of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince relates to a discovery Harry made in ‘Chamber’ that foreshadows something that he finds out in ‘Prince’.
- Tom Riddle is not the Half Blood Prince (he is Voldemort).
- Arthur Weasley is not the Minister of Magic.
- Crucial information in The Half-Blood Prince was originally planned to be placed in Chamber of Secrets, the second book.
- The HBP (half-blood prince) is not Harry or Voldemort.
- There will not be two chapters in book six titled "Lupin’s Papers" and "The Lovegoods in Court."
- An excerpt from HBP: "He looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp."
- More characters will die in book six.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE RUMORS

Take everything on this blog with a pinch of salt - these are all unsubstantiated rumours and speculation on the Half Blood Prince- except where its said that its true.

The Harry Potter series author, JK Rowling says that someone will switch houses in the 6th book. Many fans think it will be I think it will be Draco Malfoy, and that he will become friends with Harry. The reasoning goes thus - Draco Malfoy doesn’t particularly like his father,so this is possible, right? There is no confirmation on this from anyone so far.

There is speculation that there is no ‘live’ half-blood prince - that the name refers to someone who died long back. That is unlikely - it is not often that an author names a book after someone who has died. So in all probability, yes, there will be a real, live Half Blood Prince.

Here is some interesting information from JK Rowling on the book itself: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’s three chapter titles have now been revealed by the author herself. They are:

Chapter 2 of the Half Blood Prince: Spinners End
Chapter 6 of the Half Blood Prince: Draco’s Detour
Chapter 14 of the Half Blood Prince: Felix Flicius

It is also confirmed that the number of pages will be 672 pages.

The author has already said that the Half-Blood Prince is neither Harry nor Voldemort.

There are two questions which JK Rowling would like us to think about, speculate, guess, whatever.. they are:

1. Why didn’t Voldemort die when he tried to kill Harry?
2. Why didn’t Dumbledore try to kill Voldemort in that scene at the end of book five?

Hmm, we think that there is some way in which Voldemort and Harry Potter are connected - perhaps they can’t be killed - their lives are intertwined. Quite possible. Perhaps more on that will be revealved inthe Half Blood Prince.

We know that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes up the story of Harry Potter’s sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lord Voldemort’s power and followers are increasing by the day.

Half Blood Prince Theories

Snape
Professor Snape is a very mysterious character to us, yet he seems crucial to the plot of the books. The greatest mystery surrounding him is the reasoning behind Dumbledore’s trust in him. He has shown his hatred for Harry countless times, yet he has also risked his life trying to save Harry. This might be because he feels indebted to James, but there seems to be a more important underlying reason for Snape’s actions. We don’t know much about Snape’s past or lineage, but J.K. Rowling has hinted that more about Snape will be revealed. If he was a pure-blood his name should have appeared on the Black Family tree, as almost all pure-bloods are linked in this way, but it didn’t. The fact that he’s head of Slytherin house does not mean he is a pure-blood, Tom Riddle was put in Slytherin as well, so he may indeed be half-blood. There is so much to yet be explained about Snape: why he renounced being a death eater, why Dumbledore trusts him so much even when his unfairness towards anyone that is not in Slytherin is obvious, what those memories of his childhood really mean.

Hagrid is the Half-Blood Prince
It has not been specified whether or not the term "half-blood" refers to a person who has one wizard parent and one muggle parent, or if the term can refer to a person who just half wizard and half something else. So the title can be referring to Hagrid, who is half wizard and half giant. We know that J.K. Rowling was considering the use of "The Half-Blood Prince" as the title to the second book, but changed her mind, so the Chamber of Secrets must have a great deal to do with this character. In the CoS, we learn the truth about Hagrid’s past and why he was expelled from Hogwarts. He was a vital character in this plot. Perhaps Dumbledore has a deeper reason for keeping Hagrid around. It’s been revealed that his relationship with his brother, Grawp, becomes more important in book six. Not much is known of Hagrid’s lineage, but with the introduction of Grawp it is reasonable to think that a new aspect of Hagrid will come out in this book. As Hagrid is a half-breed he may become a figure of authority, a rallying point, for the other creatures who are oppressed by the Ministry. Dumbledore ceaselessly stresses how vital the allegiance of the giants will be in the war, and Hagrid’s role may become more important in creating that alliance.

Peter Pettigrew
In British history, a man named George Cruikshank was credited with exposing the private life of Prince George IV. This seems very straightforward, but for those of you who don’t see where I’m going with this, Cruikshank exposed Prince George, and Crookshanks exposed… "Prince" Peter. We’ve never been told what Peter’s blood background is- it’s entirely possible that he’s a half-blood. I think Peter Pettigrew is the Half-Blood Prince.

Reader Kelly Potter conducted in-depth research on Cruikshank, and her findings are amazing (sources: 1, 2):
- George Cruikshank was an artist. In fact, he made more than 15,000 drawings and paintings throughout his lifetime. He expressed his views on life and politics through his art rather than speech. This is similar to the characater of Crookshanks, who is unable to communicate with others by speaking, and resorts to other means (which have not yet been revealed to us).
- Cruikshank harbored ill feelings toward Prince George IV due to the Peterloo Massacre. I repeat, the Peterloo Massacre. The massacre occurred at St. Peter’s Field in August of 1819. 11 people were killed; many more were injured. On November 1, 1980 (in the fictional Harry Potter world), Peter Pettigrew caused an explosion that killed twelve muggles. JK Rowling uses the word "massacre" to describe the fictional event in the Prisoner of Azkaban.
- Lieutenant Colonel George L’Estrange was the commander of the military forces in Manchester at the time of the Peterloo Massacre. The deaths and injuries caused by the massacre were a direct result of L’Estrange’s orders. According to RhymeZone.com, "Lestrange" is a "very rare" surname, but where else have we heard this?

Also, several of you have noted that Cruikshank was educated by a man named Hogarth (source) - sound familiar?

Long Live the Weasel King! posted several comments arguing both sides of this theory. In one he discusses why Peter being the Half-Blood Prince might explain what a “Half-Blood Prince” might be. It was posted on 12/31/2004 at 07:39:40 AM.

Rip wrote an excellent rebuttal of the original theory on 01/05/2005 at 07:29:27 AM, to which Nanashi Midoriko wrote a marvelous response on 01/05/2005 at 08:45:47 AM. Afterward, a lively debate was sparked that went on for some time.

On 01/16/2005 at 05:47:18 AM, serena greenwood outlines Peter’s character in outstanding fashion, going on to explain why she does not believe Peter to be the Half-Blood Prince.

Enjoumaru posted a statement on 01/16/2005 at 11:05:45 PM explaining that “Prince” does not have to be a title of royalty. “Lord” Voldemort is not noble; it is a title he gave himself.

Gergitate posted a similar statement on 01/19/2005 at 09:42:42 PM, and went on to explain the connection between Harry and Peter, and that Voldemort may come to think of Peter as his “right hand man, or PRINCE,” an argument to which Z responded by saying, “Peter does not fit that definition of prince. On 01/23/2005 at 06:07:56 AM, serena greenwood draws parallels between Robin Hood, who was the “Prince of Thieves” and the term the “Half-Blood Prince,” stating that Robin Hood was not royal; he only stood out from other thieves because he was a noble and they were commoners.

Long Live the Weasel King! expands on this theory in his post on 01/24/2005 at 09:46:33 PM, in which he states, “Just as if a Pure-blood were to champion Half-Bloods and Muggle Borns against other Pure-bloods (i.e. Death Eaters), they would be ‘The Prince of Half-Bloods’ or ‘The Half Blood Prince.’”

The Bloody Quill wrote the following in response to parallels drawn between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings on 01/25/2005 at 10:45:33 PM:
“A relevant point to the question of Peter Pettigrew is his conspicuous absence from book five. Enjoumaru raised an interesting point about Sméagol, but another character from that same trilogy [Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings] with a similar nickname to Pettigrew is Wormtongue. Justin Finch-Fletchley
Justin could be the half-blood prince because he was introduced in Chamber of Secrets. His talk with Harry at the dueling club was supposed to be in the final cut of the movie (and here we assume J.K. Rowling wanted it to be) but had to be cut for time. (One can see the deleted scene on the DVD.) Nevertheless, J.K. makes it a point to tell us he’s muggle-born in the book (his talk with Harry), and we also know that he was going to go to Eton, a prestigious school that royal children usually go to, before he got accepted to Hogwarts. He could very well be a sort of prince.

Many Veritaserum readers have pointed out through the comment boards that Justin Finch-Fletchley is Muggle Born, a fact which the original theory states. “Muggle Born” is a term used to describe a witch or wizard that is the offspring of two completely Muggle parents, having no knowledge of the Magical World until they receive their Hogwart’s admissions letter. Muggle Borns are not “Half-Bloods,” which makes this theory unlikely.

Others have pointed out that “Half-Blood Prince” could be a title, and does not necessarily mean that the “Prince” is a “Half-Blood,” only that he is “Prince OF Half-Bloods,” though literal English translations of foreign translations of the book title suggest that the prince is indeed a half-blood rather than a prince of half-bloods.

Argus Filch
Argus Filch may be the Half-Blood Prince. J.K. Rowling said something from Chamber of Secrets would be important to the HBP plot. One plotline that never fully developed in CoS is the one in which Harry discovered Argus is a Squib. Now, just because Filch is Squib doesn’t mean he’s a half-blood, but we don’t know too much about him. One more reason, and infinitely more important than the first: Argus is a mean, cantankerous man. Why would Dumbledore keep him around? There are probably many other witches and wizards who could do Filch’s job without having the burning desire to chain students to the ceiling by their toenails. In addition, since Argus is a Squib, he can’t do magic and therefore a fully functioning witch or wizard might be more efficient for the job. In other words, Dumbledore knows Filch isn’t the greatest guy to have around kids, but I think Dumbledore feels he needs to keep Filch close by for another reason.

This Filch theory is unique, and possible, I suppose; I would not put it past JKR. However, the reasoning stated just does not hold water. Dumbledore is not the kind that would replace Filch just because he is a Squib. He would want to keep him more because others would be unwilling to. Plus, Filch is a flat character; he would need a few more layers to be able to hold the book. While this is possible, it is not likely. Filch may grow in books six and seven, but I doubt he is the Half-Blood Prince.

On JK Rowling’s Official Site, it says that something Harry discovers in Half-Blood Prince was foreshadowed by something Harry found out in Chamber of Secrets. The only two things I noticed that Harry finds out are that Filch is a Squib, and that he, Harry, is a Parselmouth. JK Rowling gave us a quote from the HBP: "He looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp." Filch: silver streaks, bushy brows, beady yellow eyes . . . walks with a limp! It’s possible!

Blaise Zabini
Blaise Zabini could be the half-blood prince because J.K. Rowling revealed his gender to us (male) and because he is a relatively new character. He seems to be one of those simple characters that we would overlook but that turns out to important. He was mentioned like an extra character just as Sirius Black and Mundungus Fletcher were in "Sorcerer’s Stone" and "Chamber of Secrets," but they turned out to be vital to the plot. We know that he is in Slytherin, and if he was pure-blood he might have been mentioned on Sirius’ family tree. So we maybe we should look at Blaise Zabini as more than just a regular old person within Hogwarts - as someone who has the potential to be the Half-Blood Prince.

The New Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher
The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher could be the Half-Blood Prince. Each of the books has had titles that relate to something new in the story; something or someone that has yet been introduced in the series thus far and that no one has ever seen. So, perhaps there is a reason that there is always a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher each year, and perhaps the new teacher will be the newly introduced person that the plot is based on.

A new character
The half-blood prince might be someone entirely new. As seen in the previous books: The Sorcerers’s Stone appears only in the first book, The Chamber of Secrets only appears in the Second Book, The Prisoner of Azkaban (Sirius Black) turns up in the third book. We didn’t know about the Triwizard competition or the Goblet of Fire before the Fourth book. We also didn’t know about the Order of Phoenix before the fifth book. It seems that the thing a title refers to always appears only in that certain book, in other words, is new or is the main focus of that book. It would be logical for this pattern to continue for the next book.

Gilderoy Lockhart
Rowling said that the second book would directly relate to the sixth, and Gilderoy Lockhart was a major character in the second book. Although his reappearance at St. Mungo’s in Order of the Phoenix was unexpected, it may mean that Rowling still has something in store for him. Also, in books two and five Lockhart viewed himself as royalty (always signing autographs, thinking he was higher up than everyone else, etc.). Though it seemed that he was just arrogant, he may have a reason for always "playing the King"…

Edit: Another theory debunked. Rowling stated that Lockhart would not recover from his illness and would not appear in later books, basically ruling him out as an HBP candidate.

Remus Lupin
Remus Lupin is half blood, as revealed by JK Rowling in her March 2004 chat. Now that Sirius is gone (or at least temporarily), Harry may look up to Lupin as he did to Sirius. Although Harry is in no way related to him, Lupin was by far Harry’s favorite teacher at Hogwarts, and he might be able to help Harry deal with the loss of Sirius — after all, Lupin lost a good friend, too. However, Lupin was not mentioned in Chamber of Secrets, which directly relates to the plot of the sixth book.

A Female Prince?
Albeit the fact that whenever 99% of Harry Potter fans hear the phrase "Half Blood Prince," they think of a male prince, it is indeed a possibility for the prince to be a female. Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary states the following for their main definition of "prince": "The one of highest rank; one holding the highest place and authority; a sovereign; a monarch; — originally applied to either sex, but now rarely applied to a female."

It would not be unlike Rowling to get most everyone sniffing in the wrong direction, and then surprise us all with the knowledge that the Half Blood Prince is a female. A simple glance at the dictionary opens more doors than there are in the Department of Mysteries…well, maybe not quite that many.

Strange as this may sound, it is possible that Hermione’s cat Crookshanks may be the Half Blood Prince. As surmised by Veritaserum editorialist Stephanie in late 2003 (read her article here), Crookshanks is half-cat, half-Kneazle. We also know that Crookshanks is a male.

Crookshanks is a highly intelligent cat - possibly too intelligent? It is also a possibility that Crookshanks is an Animagus who knows more than we think. From his behavior in the third book, we can assume that Crookshanks would be on the Order’s side, because he seemed to know Sirius’s true identity and he tried to help him. It remains possible that Crookshanks could be the Half Blood Prince.

On February 18, 2004, JK Rowling updated the rumors section of her official website, JKRowling.com.

In response to the rumor that Crookshanks is an Animagus, JK Rowling stated: "No, he’s not, but he’s not pure cat either. If you buy Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them . . . you might just be able to work out what Crookshanks really is."

In her "Extra Stuff" section, under "Characters: Crookshanks," she tells us, "Crookshanks, as anybody who has read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will have guessed, is half Kneazle."

Godric Gryffindor
In one of the Sorting Hat’s songs, we’re told that Salazar and Godric used to be real good friends. Most friends share common interest at some point in their time. This, as well as the fact that a little bit of Voldemort was put into Harry when his parents were killed, could’ve been why Harry was almost a Slytherin. J.K. Rowling also never said the Half-Blood Prince particularly had to be Half-Blood, but instead could be the Prince of the Half-Bloods. Since most wizards and witches back then were pure, it’s very possible that Godric is the Half-Blood Prince simply because he favors them. If you compare the number of Slytherin half-bloods to Gryffindor half-bloods, Gryffindor has the most.

There are two separate groups which support this Theory.

Many Veritaserum readers believe that Fawkes, Dumbledore’s phoenix companion, is in truth Godric Gryffindor, hidden in animagus form. The phoenix is a creature from Greek legend that, when it dies or is killed, bursts into flame and is resurrected from the ashes. It is also a symbol of the cleansing nature of fire, as well as rebirth.

JK Rowling has remained true to that much of the mythology behind the phoenix. Where her phoenix differs is stated in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:"Its most startling feature is its ability to regenerate itself: it bursts into flame when its body becomes old and rises from the ashes as a new-born chick. This allows these birds to grow to a great age." It is unknown whether it retains its memories or not each time it is resurrected. It is also unknown whether a wizard is able to take on a magical creature as their animagus form. All of the animagi JK Rowling has written about have been common Muggle animals, as have their patronuses. However, JK Rowling revealed on her Official Site that Dumbledore’s patronus is in fact a phoenix, though he has never summoned it in presence of Harry.

Though with the phoenix being eternal, I can see where you all are going with this. Fawkes has already helped Godric to help Harry by bringing the Sorting Hat with the sword in it, and Fawkes’ feathers are cores for both Tom and Harry’s wands, who are stepping into Salazar and Godric’s shoes in the Pure-blood vs. Half-blood/Muggleborn conflict.

A griffin is another mythological creature, much like a hippogriff, that has the front legs, torso, wings, and head of an eagle, with the body, rear legs, and tail of a lion. The posted links lead to engravings of these two mythical beasts. Note the striking similarities between the griffin and the picture of the hippogriff which was used in the design of Buckbeak for the Prisoner of Azkaban movie. It should also be noted that a lion is the mascot of Gryffindor House, not a griffin.

Kelly is one of those supporters from the other end of the spectrum. She and many others believe that the term “Half-Blood Prince” was used by Salazar Slytherin to mock Godric Gryffindor, but Godric’s supporters took the name and turned it into a title of respect.

A common assumption being made by many readers is that the excerpt from Half-Blood Prince which JK Rowling revealed behind the locked door on her site is describing the Half-Blood Prince. This has never been stated, only that it is a passage from that book. The excerpt can be viewed here, along with ten artistic renderings based on the description.

Salazar Slytherin
"The Half-Blood Prince" was an alternative title for book 2, so we have to assume that it’s background that was edited out without spoiling the book 2 plot. Most of book 2 was about the "Heir of Slytherin" (we only found out about Tom Riddle at the end). Harry found out that he might be the heir of an evil wizard, the rest of his family is dead, and he was worried about his own stereotypically evil tendencies (e.g. ability to speak Parseltongue) being taken advantage of or isolating him from others. Harry might have tried to found out more about his supposed ancestor, but by the end of book 2, all we know is that Slytherin lived 100 years ago and could speak Parseltongue. Perhaps, before edits, Harry or Hermione did research and found out more about Slytherin that will now be put in book 6 and reveal him as the half-blood prince.

Slytherin was notorious for only teaching pure-bloods. But most people at Hogwarts assume that his heir is Harry (whose mother is Muggle-born); and in the end, it turns out to be Tom Riddle (a half-blood himself) - i.e., the very people who are most likely to be of Slytherin’s line are not of pure blood themselves.

Dumbledore
Rowling doesn’t specifically clarify that the "Half-Blood Prince" is a half-blood. The "Half-Blood Prince" could simply be the prince of half-bloods, and as Dumbledore defends the whole school, he also defends half-bloods.

Book 1 Mistakes

We know that Harry’s birthday is on July 31 because that is the same day as the break-in at Gringotts. From the second book, we know that Nearly Headless Nick’s 500th Death Day Party was on 10/31/1992. Doing the math, we know that Harry’s 11th Birthday was 07/31/1991. In The Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry says his birthday is on a Tuesday, the day after Dudley’s favorite TV show (The Great Humberto). The mistake is that July 31, 1991 fell on a Wednesday, not a Tuesday like the book said. hahahaha
In book 1, after Hagrid and Harry have gone to Diagon Alley to get Harry’s things, it says Harry tried to look back at Hagrid, but when he looked back, Hagrid was gone. In the second book we find out Hagrid was expelled in his third year, so how could he have disapparated if students learn to apparate after sixth year?
Arguable: When Hagrid brought Harry to Diagon Alley for the first time, Harry heard a woman say "Seventeen sickles an ounce for Dragon Liver. They’re mad." But Hagrid told Harry that there were seventeen sickles in a galleon. So that would be like saying "100 pennies" instead of a dollar. Think of it this way: if the Dragon Liver weighed three pounds, a galleon (or for our purposes, a dollar) per ounce is quite a lot of money.

Book 2 Mistakes

At the end of the second book Dumbledore tells Harry that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. But it should say that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining descendant of Salazar Slytherin.
Arguable: When Harry goes back in Riddle’s memory, Hagrid was expelled when Dumbledore wasn’t headmaster - Professor Dippet was - but Hagrid said Dumbledore let him stay as gamekeeper at Hogwarts.
Explanation: Dumbledore convinced Dippet to let his stay on. Page 230, Riddle says "Only the Transfiguration teacher, Dumbledore, seemed to think Hagrid was innocent. He persuaded Dippit to keep Hagrid and train him as gamekeeper."
In the first book, Nearly Headless Nick says that he hasn’t eaten in "nearly four hundred years." But, in the second book, he’s celebrating his "five-hundredth deathday."-Thanks Rose

Book 3 Mistakes

In the thrid book of Harry Potter in the chapter "Grim Defeat", it says there was a clap of thunder followed immediately by forked lightning. The lightning should have come first because light travels faster than sound.
In Harry Potter And The Prisioner of Azkaban, American Paperback version, on page 186, paragraph 10, when Professor Lupin is talking there are no end quotes. It says: "They planted the Whomping Willow the same year that I arrived at Hogwarts. People used to play a game, trying to get near enough to touch the trunk. In the end, a boy called Davey Gudgeon nearly lost an eye, and we were forbidden to go near it. No broom stick would have a chance.
Response from Amy: Although in the American version it says the Harry shoved some gold into Stan’s hands, in the Australian version, it says that he shoved some silver into his hands.
In chapter 15, The Quidditch Final, it said Madam Hooch’s whistle rang out as she soared over to Montague and began shouting at him. A minute later, Katie had put another penalty past the Slytherin SEEKER. It should say the Slytherin Keeper.

Book 4 Mistakes

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, US edition page 148, at the bottom it states that Ron, Harry, and Hermione had entered Ron’s room, which is here called the "attic room". However, on page 154, it states at the bottom that one of the sounds that could be heard from Ron’s room was the ghoul "in the attic". How, then, could Ron’s room be considered the attic room, when there is a ghoul living above that room in "the attic."
On page 705 in the US paperback edition, Fudge says, "You are prepared to believe that Lord Voldemort has returned, on the word of a lunatic murderer, and a boy who…well…" Shouldn’t he have said "You-Know-Who" or "He Who Must Not Be Named" like he usually does?
In the American paperback edition of Goblet of Fire, on page 319, it says: "Resisting the urge to give Ron a good hard poke in the back of the head, he finally reached the table and sat down at it. Later, on page 322, it says: "As Harry watched, he saw Hagrid and Moody get up to leave. He waved, then remembered that Hagrid couldn’t see him. Moody, however, paused, his magical eye on the corner where Harry was standing." First it said he was sitting, then it said he was standing.

Book 5 Mistakes

In the American Edition, page 575, it says that Ron missed fourteen goals, but Ginny caught the Snitch, causing Gryffindor to lose by ten. If Hufflepuff scored 14 times, but the final score was 240 to 230, and Ginny caught the Snitch, shouldn’t it be 150 to 140, Gryffindor winning?
In chapter , page 10 says that Dudley and his gang are riding their ‘’expensive racing bikes'’ through the park. But on page 12, Dudley ‘’was strolling along at his ease.'’ Where did Dudley’s bike go?
The cover of OotP shows Harry in the Department of Mysteries holding his wand in his left hand. However, it is clearly stated that his right arm is his wand arm.
In the American Hardcover Edition, on page 414 (The Lion and the Serpent) it says: "He (Harry) saw the Snitch’s silver wings protruding from between his fingers, struggling for release." But, in the first book, Oliver calls the snitch "The Golden Snitch." So why would it be silver in any way?

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

"I say to you all, once again—in the light of Lord Voldemort’s return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Lord Voldemort’s gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust."

So spoke Albus Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts. But as Harry enters his fifth year at wizard school, it seems those bonds have never been more sorely tested. Lord Voldemort’s rise has opened a rift in the wizarding world between those who believe the truth about his return, and those who prefer to believe it’s all madness and lies—just more trouble from Harry Potter.

Add to this a host of other worries for Harry…

• A Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher with a personality like poisoned honey

• A venomous, disgruntled house-elf

• Ron as keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team

• And of course, what every student dreads: end-of-term Ordinary Wizarding Level exams

…and you’d know what Harry faces during the day. But at night it’s even worse, because then he dreams of a single door in a silent corridor. And this door is somehow more terrifying than every other nightmare combined.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

It’s the pivotal fourth novel in the seven-part tale of Harry Potter’s training as a wizard and his coming of age. Harry wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to the International Quidditch Cup with Hermione, Ron, and the Weasleys. He wants to dream about Cho Chang, his crush (and maybe do more than dream). He wants to find out about the mysterious event that’s supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year, an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn’t happened for a hundred years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. Unfortunately for Harry Potter, he’s not normal — even by wizarding standards.

And in his case, different can be deadly.

Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Now he has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter’s defeat of You-Know-Who was Black’s downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, "He’s at Hogwarts… he’s at Hogwarts." Harry Potter isn’t safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his friends. Because on top of it all, there may well be a traitor in their midst.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he’s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls’ bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley’s younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone — or something — starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? The Lord Voldemort actor recently did an interview with USA Today where he said he will reprise the role of Harry’s foe in Order of the Phoenix. He also talked a little about how his slimy Voldemort, complete with a reptilian nose and gleaming skull, turned out.

"When I saw it all put together, I thought it was great. It’s a long scene and was cut down a bit, and I wondered if it could have had a little more air in it."

He wasn’t sure how his nose would look "because it’s quite difficult technically to make that work." As for his head, "It’s not a bald cap. It’s all me."

OrdeR of the PhoeniX CastinG CompletE

Danielle Symonds of Enchantment Casting, a theatrical agency in South Wales that has represented many HP hopefuls in the past, let us know that all open casting and auditions for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix are over, and therefore, she "wouldn’t advise anyone to apply for parts now."

She also provided us with a few more OotP casting updates. Among them:

The roles of Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt have been cast. CBBC Newsround reported several weeks ago that two actors were "in talks" for both of these roles, but they have now been cast. We won’t know who has the roles until a press release is issued, however.
They are in "the very final stages" of casting for the roles of young Lily, Snape, Lupin, James, Peter, Sirius, and all others who appear in that pensieve scene.
Marietta Edgecombe and Lavender Brown are not currently known to be included in the film, but they may end up having small bits here and there.
Warner Bros. has all child extras needed. Adult extras will be cast after Christmas.

‘OrdeR of the PhoeniX’ CastinG NeWs

We’ve recently been in contact with Enchantment Casting, a casting agency in the UK who represent young actors and actresses - in this case, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix candidates. The casting agency have been able to tell us a bit of information about the casting process, which included: the search for Tonks is over; she was cast right after casting began.

It seems that casting has finished for young Lily, Snape, Lupin and James, as well as Luna - which will be announced in the coming weeks. An interesting point is that it seems Marietta Edgecombe and Lavender Brown may be cut from the film, as EC have not heard any word about these parts - and they are usually briefed on all parts relating to the film. All children and extras are cast, and adult casting will begin in early January.

LunA AnnouncemenT ‘within weeks’

A final decision on who will play Luna Lovegood in the fifth Harry Potter movie could be made within weeks.

The search for a teenager to play the eccentric Ravenclaw fourth year began more than two months ago.

Casting directors have visited dozens of schools across the UK with filming on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix due to begin in February.

In November CBBC Newsround revealed that producers have narrowed the search down to five girls.

This followed a process that saw casting staff visiting schools and looking at photographs sent in to Warner Brothers.

Over the past few weeks, several sites and message boards on the internet have featured teenagers saying that they are one of the final five with many of them posting photographs of themselves.

Girls who are really in the last few have been asked to keep the news secret and Warner Brothers say that as far as they are aware, none of the names or photographs of the girls genuinely in the last five have appeared on any website.

News on which lucky girl will get the part is expected in early January, with other casting news later in the year.

Imelda Staunton is already known to be the front runner for the part of Professor Umbridge. Other parts to be cast include Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt.

Mostly all Australian and maybe international post offices have now brought out these new Harry Potter Stamps!

Ten of the most memorable characters from the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire™, Warner Bros. Pictures’ fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s celebrated Harry Potter novel series, have been captured in the latest souvenir stamp sheet from Australia Post.

Harry Potter™, Hermione Granger™, Ron Weasley™, Viktor Krum, Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, Mad-Eye Moody, Barty Crouch Jr, Professor Dumbledore™ and Rita Skeeter are featured on the stamp tabs and are surrounded by a delightful montage of characters, creatures and scenes from the latest Harry Potter movie.

Featuring the fierce and deadly Hungarian Horntail dragon, a Grindylow, a mermaid; Hogwarts™ castle; Hermione, Ron and Harry with the Goblet of Fire and the Triwizard champions, Harry, Cedric, Fleur and Viktor with the Triwizard Cup, this immense array of imagery is just a glance at what is in store in the upcoming movie.

But they wont last long only for a limted time!

The Harry in question? Harry Potter, of course. GrandPre is the artist behind the images of Harry seen on the American versions of the books by author J.K. Rowling. Her latest cover, for �?oHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,�?� was released Tuesday. The book, sixth in the series of seven, comes out July 16.

You can’t judge a book by its cover?

In the United Kingdom, that hoary adage apparently isn’t just a clich�, it’s untrue. When J.K. Rowling’s sixth Harry Potter tome lands on British bookshelves July 16, readers there will be able to choose between an ‘adult’ and ‘children’s’ edition of the book.

There’s no racy content, but the adult printing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, while not requiring a plain brown wrapper, will sport a look different from its juvenile counterpart. (The U.S. version, also out July 16, was illustrated by Rowling’s longtime American collaborator, Mary GrandPre.)

Harry Potter runs for cover

NEW YORK — The hype surrounding the latest Harry Potter instalment heated up yesterday as the cover designs for the highly anticipated book were revealed. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is to be published July 16.

The cover on the children’s version that will be seen in Canada, by British illustrator Jason Cockcroft, features Harry and the headmaster of Hogwart’s school of wizardry, Prof. Dumbledore, engulfed in a ring of flames. The illustration will also grace books sold around the world, with the exception of the United States.

WEALTH OF IMAGES

‘Each Harry Potter book has such a wealth of detail and dramatic images,’ Cockcroft said in a news release.

‘It is not often that one has the chance to work with an author of such vision, and it has been a hugely exciting challenge capturing the essence of J.K. Rowling’s vision of the world of Harry Potter on the book jackets.’

The version marketed to adults shows an image by British photographer Michael Wildsmith of a weather-beaten copy of Advanced Potion Making.

Cockcroft also did the cover illustration for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Washington: The latest book in the Harry Potter series ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,’ may see the boy wizard battling something creepy and uncanny, as the cover of the book suggests.

The cover shows Harry and Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore peering into a basin emanating a green light, which leads one to conjecture that Harry and his mentor may be trying to see the future.

‘For the cover of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,’ the mood of the art is truly eerie,’ says artist Mary GrandPre, creator of artwork for the Harry Potter series, was quoted by Zap2it.com.

‘I wanted the colours to be strong and I chose upward lighting and dramatic shadows to convey a kind of surreal place and time,’ she added.”

Amazon.com announces pre-orders on ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ over 100,000 copies

Amazon.com, the popular Internet retailer has today announced that it has received over 100,000 pre-orders for the next title in JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ series.

‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ went to the top of Amazon’s sales chart within 24 hours of its release date announcement.

The children’s edition of the book, which features a different cover to the adult version, has remained at the top of the chart since its release was announced, with the adult version occupying the fifth spot.

The fifth title in the popular series ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ is Amazon’s best selling item ever, with pre-orders of over 420,000.

Amazon is planning to send out copies of the sixth book from 16 July, the date of its publication.

Was Harry Potter DRAFTED?

JK Rowling investigating US Army.

He’s taken on dragons, Dementors, a basilisk and even Lord Voldemort himself, but Harry Potter’s latest challenge is the US Army. A character who some say looks like the teen wizard has appeared in a manual sent to US troops, but the army say they haven’t copied anybody.

The strip also features a Mogmarts School of Magic, where a Professor Rumbledore takes lessons.
Lawyers for Potter author JK Rowling say they are investigating.

…As well as names which sound a bit like Dumbledore and Hogwarts, the cartoon strip has a few other familiar-sounding characters.

Over 900 children treated to a screening of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher=?iso-8859-1?B?4j9U?=s Stone “

Accompanied by parents, over 900 children of different schools found themselves in a magical world as they were treated to a screening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher�?Ts Stone at Sujata Cinema on Sunday.
For the most part of the two-and-a-half-hour show, the students were in raptures as they followed the exploits of Harry and his friends.

Abhishek, a student of Surendranath Centenary School, said he was thrilled to see the characters by J.K. Rowling come alive on the silver screen. �?oI have read most of the Harry Potter novels but I always wanted to watch the films. I had a great experience today. It was a really exciting film. The special effects were amazing. I loved the scene where Harry and the other children are taught how to ride brooms,�?� he said.
